Apprenticeships in London There is a rising number of Apprenticeships in London and most Colleges are helping to drive the growth.

(Source: National Apprenticeship Service, 2012)

Apprenticeships bring value to employers, individuals and the economy. Businesses across London are increasingly realising the significant benefits that Apprenticeships create, not only in terms of developing a highly skilled workforce but also by boosting productivity and staff retention. Research shows that Apprenticeships are an optimal way of training, developing and skilling people for the future, helping businesses to secure a supply of people with the skills and qualities they need and which are often not available on the external job market.

In 2012 AoC London launched its “Manifesto for the Mayor from the Capital’s Colleges.” The manifesto pledges included “Employer Engagement for Smarter Skills.”

AoC London is now working closer than ever with the Mayor and his team, and the National Apprenticeship Service, to deliver an increasing number of first rate Apprenticeships or Londoners, working with the GLA to boost the number of employers training their staff in Colleges. On a wider level, AoC London is a valuable voice on the London Enterprise Panel’s Skills and Employment Working Group.

Supporting employers, business and enterprise across the capitalColleges work together with London businesses and public sector employers to support growth, employment and successful enterprise. This includes basic skills training and employer-based short courses, right through to Higher Apprenticeship and Foundation Degrees enabling Colleges and employers to deliver the advanced skills critical for growth.

Global EnterpriseLondon Colleges work together to respond to the growing international demand for higher level and technical skills, which are recognised as crucial to economic growth. London Colleges, at the heart of the capital, are uniquely placed to help meet this growing demand. In 2010/11 over 4,500 non-EU students studied in FE Colleges in the region.

Helping to get people back into workColleges work together with Jobcentre Plus and Work Programme Providers to help unemployed Londoners into jobs. For example, providing flexible training and short courses, and providing tailored CV advice and interview skills.

There are also excellent examples of London Colleges working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, linking projects to provide local unemployed residents with employability and vocational training linked to employer needs.

AoC London can help broker relationships with links for Jobcentre Plus, Work Programme Providers and Colleges.
