• Is the speed fast or slow? • Does it change (varying), or stay the same (Constant)? • Does the music feel rushed, just right, or dragging?
• When the speed changes, is this because of something else in the music? (e.g., the lyrics, or different instruments)

• Is the texture thick or thin? • How many different parts are playing / singing? Does that change?

• What rhythms can you identify (clap) in the music? • Are they faster or slower than the pulse?
• Are they urgent / relaxed? • Do they repeat? How often?
• Are they constant, or varying in speed?

• Is it loud or quiet? • Does it change (varying), or stay the same (Constant)?
• Does it use the dynamics (volume) to create dramatic moments? • Does it use volume to convey a mood or feeling?

Instruments Clues:
• What instruments can you hear? • Do they change (varying), or stay the same (Constant)?
• Is one louder (more noticeable) than the others? • Are their voices? How many? Male or Female?
• Are these instruments well suited to the mood / feeling / meaning of the music?

Structure Clues:
• What separate parts (sections) can you identify in the music? (e.g. verses and choruses, one repeating melody/ tune)
• Is each part similar, or very different? • In what way?
• Are any parts repeated or altered as the music goes on? • Could you explain the structure like stanzas of a poem? (e.g. A B A)

Opinion Clues:
• What do you think of the music – do you like it? • Why do you like / dislike the music?
• What would you change about the music if you could? (Voices? Instrumentation? Tempo? Dynamics? Texture?) • Do the people around you agree? What do they think?

• Is the piece trying to convey a certain mood? • Does it make you feel that way?
• What is it about the music that invites that mood? (Instruments, tempo, dynamics, lyrics?)

Pitch Clues:
• Listen to the main player / singer – describe their pitch – high, low or in the middle?
• Listen to the other players / singers – are they all close in pitch, or is there a range?
• How many at each pitch can you hear? • Listen to the range of one of the parts – does it stay high/low, or

• Listen to the music – Can you identify any of the instruments? • Where in the world do you think they are from?
