TV Drama:
What does TV drama sound like?
What is diegetic sound?What is non-diegetic sound?
• Diegetic sound is sound that originates from within the scene. The characters CAN hear it.
• Non-diegetic sound is sound that has been added in post production (after filming). The audience can hear but the characters cannot.
Listen to this sequence from a TV drama: Lost
• Note down all the sounds and noises you hear.
After listening to the sequence, answer thesequestions:
1. How well can you understand the plot with only sound?
2. What did sound suggest was happening in the sequence?
