What makes us a LEAP state? Massachusetts public higher education recognizes that the public good of an educated citizenry is inherently aligned with the individual benefit of social mobility and the health of the Commonwealth’s economic engine.

In Massachusetts, our students are our common wealth.

How can we systematically and intentionally steer our statewide efforts and campus initiatives to promote quality, completion, and equity?Mapping ongoing programs and initiatives* in relation to key LEAP values can start a positive discussion and help decision-makers at every level be intentional as they shape policies and steer efforts that serve our students.

As a state system, we must work to ensure that quality, equity and completion are all valued by our key stakeholders: Campus Faculty and other Educators, Students and Parents, Employers, and State Government and Taxpayers.

Michigan Draft LEAP State Action Plan Year 11. Recommended Initial Focus (From Michigan Focus on Essential Learning Outcomes (MIFELO) Steering Committee and Michigan public institution Provosts’ LEAP State Application October 5, 2015)

• Continuance of statewide discussions about best practices at member institutions with regard to assessment of general education (closing the loop), the use of high impact practices and value rubrics, and strategies to facilitate integrative learning.

• Sharing data and making recommendations on how all member institutions can increase the success of underserved groups. This is vital to our success as a state and a nation.

• Development of a statewide communication plan to convey the value of the knowledge, attitudes and skills developed through an integrated general education program to students, parents, legislators and employers.

Michigan Draft LEAP State Action Plan Year 12. Recommended Action Steps for Year 1 Step 1:

• Join the LEAP Faculty Collaborative initiative and create an Instate Collaborative to Advance Learning Outcome Assessment in General Education. • Focus discussions on best practices in general education assessment and continuous improvement through the use of high impact

practices and value rubrics, and strategies to facilitate integrative learning.• In addition to the LEAP steering committee members include faculty, institutional research, and general education committee

representatives from each Michigan public institution.

Step 2:

• Collect and disaggregate general education assessment data for each public institution to determine the impact of general education/foundation courses on student subpopulations (veterans, underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, low SES, first generation, transfer, international, etc.)

• Identify which LEAP skills (intellectual, practical, personal, and social responsibility skills) are taught in Michigan’s general education programs/foundation courses.

Step 3:

• Develop a communication plan for internal and external stakeholders that demonstrates the value of general education Essential Learning Outcomes and how the skills taught through Michigan’s general education programs contribute to Inclusive Excellence and to the economy and welfare of citizens, employers and the State of Michigan.

Vision: The ND LEAP Collaborative will foster cooperation among North Dakota institutions of higher learning while respecting the autonomy of each institution. The Collaborative will focus on general education issues because general education represents the greatest common ground shared among institutions represented by the North Dakota General Education Council (NDGEC) and the North Dakota University System (NDUS). With support of the NDGEC in collaboration with AAC&U and the NDUS, the ND Collaborative will sponsor faculty development opportunities and promote equity, quality education, and effective learning to accomplish shared goals across the state.

Questions, Objectives, Opportunities: What NDGEC goals does its membership want the ND Collaborative HUB to accomplish? Should the HUB be focused exclusively on General Education? What is the best way to achieve shared accountability, ownership, and sustainability among NDGE leadership and its members? What kind of technical support, human resources, and access are necessary, desirable, and possible through NDGEC’s relationship with NDUS? Principle: The HUB is a servant to the General Education Council!
