What is LCD TV?
Liquid-crystal display televisions (LCD TV) are color television sets that use LCD technology to produce images
Produces colored image by selecting filtering a white light
Thinner and lighter than CRTs of similar display size
The concept of LCD was 1st brought up by Philips

COMPARISON BETWEEN LCD & PLASMA:-
WEAKNESSES:-
Motion response time- The ability for an LCD TV to display fast moving objects has been a weakness of LCD technology
Contrast ratio- A good contrast ratio to have in an LCD TV is 1,500:1 or higher. Anything less than 1,500:1, especially on a set that is 32-inches or larger, may not provide an optimum viewing experience.
Screen Size:- Currently, the largest LCD televisions available to the general consumer are in the 65-inch screen size, while the largest Plasma television available for sale for commercial purposes currently is a 103 inch model from Panasonic's Business Division.
Cost of production:- In larger screen sizes, LCD televisions are more expensive to produce than Plasma televisions
OPPORTUNITIES:-
High Definition (HD) Driving Demand:- The move to HD is proving a key driver for the growth of the world LCD markets, with cable and satellite providers offering more channels in HD
Reduced Prices:- The continuous reduction in LCD prices has proved a major driver for the LCD market as it has opened up new markets, such as India and China, which were earlier inaccessible because of price barriers
Next-generation Gaming Consoles:- HD LCD TVs are recommended bymost retail and media outlets for gaming
THREATS:-FUTURE TECHNOLOGY OF TV
OLED (Organic light emitting diode)•Sony introduced this technology in 2008•It doesn’t required backlighting•Allow less power consumption•Screen are so thin and so flexible that one can roll them up like a carpet•We will have OLED based TV in our living room around 2015

LASER TV:- The laser technology claims that
the technology will allow displays with a richer, more vibrant colour palette than the conventional plasma, LCD or CRT displays
They also claim the displays will: - be half the weight and cost of
plasma displays - require around 25% of the
power required by Plasma displays
- be very thin like plasma and LCD displays are today
- have a very wide colour gamut, twice that of current HDTV's.
- have a 50,000 hour life - maintain full power output for
the lifespan of the laser, resulting in a picture that doesn't progressively degrade over time (which happens with technologies such as plasma, LCD and CRT)

•the performance characteristics relating to picture quality, thinness and environmental performance (power consumption) will be significantly improved
•contrast ratio of 100,000:1 and a wide color gamut
•Development of technology to transmit the video signal via millimeter wave and incorporation of the technology into the prototype
