LOCATION• KIDNEYS are part of the URINARY SYSTEM

• LOCATED in LUMBAR REGION of the BACK

• ONE KIDNEY on each side of the VERTEBRAE

• UNDER BACK MUSCLES and ABOVE the WAIST

STRUCTURE• THE KIDNEYS have an INDENTATION toward the center

that gives it a BEAN-SHAPE.

• The Center of this INDENTATION is the called the HILUM.

• HILUM is location of RENAL VEIN and RENAL ARTERY

• Each KIDNEY Weights 4 to 6 Ounces. Is 2 to 3 Inches wide and 1 Inch Thick.

STRUCTURE• The Outer Shell of the Kidneys is named the

CORTEX.

• The Inner Shell of the KIDNEYS is named the MEDULLA.

• Inside the MEDULLA are triangular-shaped areas named RENAL PYRAMIDS.

FUNCTION• The Major Function of the KIDNEYS is to Maintain

Homeostasis and PH balance Within the body.

• Contains Nephrons, the functioning Elements in KIDNEYS.

• Filters Blood to Excrete Excess Chemicals, Waste and Water.

• Process Urine and Transports to Bladder by way of Ureters

• KIDNEY STONES- Caused by Water Insufficiency and Build-Up of Mineral Salts

• RENAL FAILURE-Inability to Process and Filter Waste

• PHELONEPHRITIS- Inflammation of Renal Pelvis and Kidney Caused by Urinary Tract Infection

TREATMENT• Can be passed in Urine or

May Require Surgical Removal

• HEMDIALYSIS Machine Cleanses and Returns Blood to the Body

• Antibiotics and Increase of Fluid Intake
