Outreach Services

Outreach Services' goal is to bring the library to the nontraditional or under-served patron through programs and services. Whether patrons are in their homes, senior housing, rehabilitation centers or county correctional facilities, Outreach Services brings the library experience and resources to the community.

Events Family Story time

Tuesdays, September 13, Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 8, Nov. 15 & Nov. 22, 7:00 p.m. For children age 2 and up. Share books, stories, rhymes, music, and movement with your children.

Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa Stories and FunSaturday, Dec. 3, 10:30–11:30 a.m. Toddler-Grade 5. Enjoy stories, songs and dances of Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. Arrive early to play with dreidels. A craft activity will follow the program. 

Computers

Access to the Internet at Hennepin County Library is available to anyone with a valid library card registered in the system. Sign up is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations may only be made in person.

Library users can also bring their own laptop computers to any library location and use free wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi).

Services offered at all libraries:   • word processing (MS Word 2007)  • presentation software (MS Power point 2007) (except Osseo Library)  • sophisticated graphics software (GIMP)  • desktop publishing software (Scribus)  • laser printing (no iron-on transfers, which can damage the printers.)   • users may download to disk, USB drive, or burn to CD.

Facts about Hennepin County Library

Hennepin County Library launched in 1922; its headquarters are at Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka, Minn.

In 2008 the Hennepin County Library system merged with the Minneapolis Library system, creating a premier 41-library system to serve both city and suburban Hennepin County. Forty-one libraries. More than 5 million books, CDs and DVDs in 40 world languages. Around 1,750 public computers. Eleven library board members. One great system serving 1.1 million residents of Hennepin County.

Author Talk: N.M. Kelby

Tuesday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m.  Nationally renowned author Kelby will read from her new novel, "White Truffles in Winter." The novel imagines the world of the remarkable French chef Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935) in the twilight of his years. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Sponsored by Friends of the Ridgedale Library; Sponsored by the Magers and Quinn Booksellers.

Socrates CaféThursdays, Sept. 1–Nov. 17, 7 p.m.Sit back and philosophize with your friends and neighbors. The topic is decided by popular vote at the beginning of the meeting. All welcomed; no experience necessary. The concept of Socrates Café is based on the book of the same name by Christopher Phillips.

Special collections

The Department of Special Collections at the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library houses the University of St. Thomas Libraries' collection of rare books and manuscripts as well as the University Archives.  Its collection of more than 23,000 book volumes and 2400 cubic feet of manuscripts and archival records includes important collections of photographs, films, architectural drawings and ephemera. 

The collections held by the the University Archives document the history of the University of St. Thomas, the St. Paul Seminary, Nazareth Hall Seminary, St. John Vianney Seminary, St. Thomas Military Academy (to 1965) and the Catholic Digest (1939 - 2001).

Among its holdings are the official records of administrative offices, academic departments & student organizations, theses & dissertations, the College newspaper (The Aquin), the College and Academy yearbooks (Aquinas and The Kaydet), plus selected professional papers and publications of UST faculty and administrators.

St. Thomas Archives

Housed in the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library, the Media Resources Collection includes streaming videos, DVDs, videocassettes, CD-ROMs, and others. Its primary mission is to support the University's curriculum and instruction.

Consists of economics and mathematics books, economics journals, working papers, and a few government publications.

Can be used by anyone but only faculty and graduate students from Department of Economics can check items out.

Collection

History of Library The library began in 1967 with donated books

and journals from department professors, with many from the collection of Jacob Schmookler. A fund was set up for purchasing books and journal subscriptions, and we still acquire books.  Journals are now accessed primarily through the University Library's electronic collection, although we have the major economics journals in paper from 2000-2008.  There is a useful like to our new book lists, economics journals and the index EconLit on the website above. 

Conclusion I enjoyed visiting all of these libraries but the

one I didn’t like was the library in St. Thomas because it was huge and you could get confused in it very easily if it is the first time you visit this library. the one I liked the most was the one in Ridgedale because I am familiar with it and know where all the books are located.
