Life-Long Reading
South staff visited Harmon High School for a Youth Health Fair. They
shared information about new hit teen books and talked to the students
about reading.
West staff presented book talks for students at Arrowhead, including a
class of special needs students. They were very interested in the library
and the help they could receive finding books. Staff is working to set up a
monthly activity for the students.
Main received a visit from 100 3rd grade students from Whittier
Elementary. The students participated in three different activities: Read
Aloud (where staff read stories and the students discussed them),
Monitored Independent Reading (where students could choose two books
and read to themselves), and a Scavenger Hunt featuring examples of
figurative language and text features.
Life-Start Reference
Main staff presented their Veterans in Transition-Life Skills class to
residents of Harbor Light Village. The class covers both education and
entertainment resources that can benefit veterans. Staff also registered
several attendees for library cards
West has seen a marked increase in One-on-One instructional sessions.
Staff members have helped patrons with computer skills, eReaders,
resume writing, and reference questions.
South held their second annual health fair. 120 people attended to
receive information from dozens of organizations including KCKCC,
Juntos, Wyandotte County Health Department, and more.
Community-Life Entertainment
Turner received a donation of four
Monarch Butterfly cocoons. They were
able to place the cocoons in a visible
area and patrons watched them hatch.
The butterflies were then released into
the garden.
Schlagle held the 9th Annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival
during the week of September 22-27. 330 students from Bethel, John
Fiske, Frances Willard, T.A. Edison, McKinley, W.A. White and Parker
Elementary attended field trips where they learned about insect
anatomy, butterfly biodiversity, Monarch migration and tagging and
insect collection and identification. On Saturday, September 27th, the
public event was held with 182 patrons enjoying the beautiful weather
and fun festivities. Activities included face painting , insect catching, live
insect displays, Monarch tagging demonstrations, kids crafts and native
wildflower seed balls.
Mobile Library Launch
The Mobile Library ribbon cutting was held on October 1. A crowd of 60
attended to see the library and to hear speeches given by library and school
staff. It was a beautiful day and a successful launch!
Upcoming Events
Author Jan Thomas will be at the
KCKECC Pre-school on Friday,
November 7 from 1:15 to 1:45 pm.
She will read to the students from her
book Is Everyone Ready For Fun?
There will be a local author fair at
South Branch on October 25. One of
the featured authors will be Dr. Evelyn
Hill and her book, Women Under
Construction.
Two of the library’s staff will also be
featured. Lisa Cindrich and Jay Sparks,
authors of the book Executables, are staff
members at West Wyandotte.
