• Biomass: The total mass of the living organisms in a certain area.
• Food Chain: a ‘Chain’ or series of living things in which each member depends for food, and therefore energy, on the member below in it the Chain. The chain begins with a producer (plant life) and ends with a top carnivore.
• Producer: An organism (usually a green plant) which can produce nutrient tissue (food) from simple chemicals, often by photosynthesis.
• consumer: An organism (usually an animal) which eats producers or other consumers.
• Herbivore: An animal which eats grass or other plant life. A herbivore is usually a primary consumer.
• Carnivore: An animal (or, very rarely, a plant) which eats mainly animals.
• Predator: An animal which kills and eats another animal. The other animal is the prey of the other predator.
• Prey: An animal hunted or caught for food.
