John Dewey• 1859- Birth• 1872-Entered High School, Dewey completed High School in three years.• 1875-Entered College at the University of Vermont at only 16 years old.• 1879-Dewey graduated from college, he took a teaching position in Pennsylvania

for two years.• 1882-Entered Graduate school at John Hopkins University.• 1884-94- Dewey taught at the University of Michigan, he was appointed

Department Chair of Philosophy.• 1896-Dewey played a part in the development of the first experimental school

called the University Elementary School.

Dewey outlined his view of how education could improve

society; he made a contribution to education by being the founder of what

became known as the Progressive Education

Movement.
