Basics of copyright

• There are two sets of copyright:- Song Copyright (Composition and Lyrics)- Sound Recording Copyright (Master Recording)

• Ownership of Copyright- Copyright of the song is owned by the writer and publisher- Sound recording copyright is generally owned by the company or

individual who has financed the recording. This is generally the Record Company

• Exploitation of song copyright is further divided into:- Performing rights (public performances)- Mechanical rights (copy)

What are the rights of Copyright?

• The right to reproduce.

Joining PRS for Music:

While members can join either PRS or MCPS, it is usually the case that they join both societies together. Current membership fees are:

MCPS or PRS writer fee is £50 and £400 for a publisher per society.

What does it take to earn a £100 in royalties?• 6.5 mins of Radio 1 play

• 1.1 mins on BBC 1 primetime • 450,000 online streams

• 17 live gigs in a pub or club• 147 album sales

• The actual amount the member receives is dependent on their ownership in the work.
