iThenticate?
1. iThenticate? – Article Similarity Checking Program iThenticate is a tool to compare authored work against the content in the database and highlight
matching or similar text for further editorial review.
iThenticate is a part of CrossCheck which is an initiative started by CrossRef to help its members actively
engage in efforts to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism.
About 530 societies and publishers are using this program to detect plagiarism in editing process.

How to Get an iThenticate Account
1. Request an iThenticate Account Only UNIST professors can use iThenticate
because this program has limitation of number
of checking documents.
* Limitation: 1,000 document per 1 year,
* Undergraduate and graduate students can
use ‘turn it in’.
UNIST professors need to submit the
application form to get an iThenticate account.

2. Notification of iThenticate Account and Temporary Password After submitting the application,
the administrator will send an e-
mail to notify the account and
temporary password.

How to use iThenticate
1. Submit a Document How to: Go to ‘Submit a Document’ menu > Select a submission method > Submit a file > Upload
Submission methods
Upload a File
A single file submission.
The file may not exceed 400 pages and size may not exceed 40 MB.
File types: MS Word, Text, PostScript, PDF, HTML, Word Perfect WPD,
OpenOffice ODT, RTF, Hangul HWP
Zip File Upload
Submit a standard zip file containing multiple documents. May contain up to
100MB or 1,000 files. Zip file uploads of significant size may require additional
time to complete.
Multiple File Upload Drag & Drop upload (Java Plug-in is needed)
Cut & Paste Submission of text copied and pasted into the submission box.

2. View Similarity Reports Check the result: Click the similarity index icon under the report column.

3. Excluding Specific Sources and Small Matches Exclude Sources: If the user determines a matched source is not needed, the user remove the match to
recalculate the similarity.
① Similarity report > All Sources > Exclude Sources
② Select the sources by clicking in the check box > Exclude

Filters & Settings: It is available to exclude quotes, bibliography and small matches by setting ‘filters &
settings’ option to recalculate the similarity.
① Similarity report > Filters & Settings > Check options > Apply Changes
② Filter options
※ Filter options can be applied to each folders. Refer to folder options on p.10.

Create Folders and Set Folder Options
Creating folders and folder groups will help a user organize their documents. And a user can set folder options to
check and calculate similarity.

2. Folder Options for Checking Similarity Exclude quotes Exclude quotes from comparison
Exclude bibliography Exclude bibliography from comparison
Exclude Phases Exclude added phases from documents
※ How to add phrases: Folder > Settings > Phrase Exclusions
Exclude Small Matches Exclude match instances from the Similarity Report.
Exclude Small Sources Exclude sources from the Similarity Report.
Exclude Sections Exclude the Abstract and Methods and Materials sections from
Similarity Reports.
Limit searches to repositories Choose which collections to search
• CrossCheck - research articles, books, and conference proceedings
provided by the worlds scientific, technical and medical publishers
• Internet - archived and live publicly available internet pages
• Publications - third party periodical, journal, and publication
content including many major professional journals, periodicals, and
business publications
