Topic : Convergence of Technologies
Presented by:
Sandhya Jeswani
Convergence:-
Convergence is the
approach towards a
common view. It can
be thought in
several different
ways and can be felt
in commn,
entertainment and
computing.
Convergence:-
Convergence can also be
defined as interlinking of
computing and information
technologies, media content
and communication
networks with various
activities, products and
services that have emerged
in a digital media space.
Types of Convergence:-1. Technological Convergence
2. Communication
Convergence
3. Media Convergence
4. Messaging Convergence
5. Vertical Convergence
6. Horizontal Convergence 7. Payload Convergence
8. Protocol Convergence
9. Physical Convergence
10Derive Convergence
11. Application
Convergence
1. Technological Convergence
Technological Convergence is the
tendency for
different
technological systems to evolve
towards performing similar tasks.
Communication convergence includes
electronic media, telecommunication
media and broadcast media to provide
distinct services. It is the combination of
all such different media operating into
one platform.
2. Communication
Convergence
3. Media Convergence
Media Convergence is the concept in which
old and new media intersect. It is not just a
technological shift or process; it also
includes shifts within the industrial,
cultural & social paradigms that
encourages the consumer to seek out new
information.
4. Messaging Convergence
Messaging convergence integrates SMS
with voice, such as Voice SMS (voice
instead of text) and SpinVox (Voice to
text). Several operators have launched
services that combine SMS with Mobile
Instant Messaging (MIM).
5. Vertical Convergence
Vertical convergence consists in
marketing products beyond
telephony (fixed & mobile), internet
and television. Examples are
ringtones, music, event tickets etc.
6. Horizontal Convergence
Horizontal convergence consists in
marketing products, selling them and
servicing them through a mobile channel.
Examples are music download through
the mobile phone, mobile e-mail, mobile
TV, mobile news alerts etc.
Some other types of
convergence are:-
7. Payload Convergence
Payload convergence is that aspect of
converged networking wherein different
data types are carried in the same
communication format. However , the
payload convergence does not prohibit
the network form handling packets,
according to their service requirement.
8. Protocol Convergence
Protocol convergence is the movement
away from multi-protocol to single
protocol (typically IP) networks. It
provides the services necessary for
multiple types of data (such as voice, one
way video, and interactive video).
9. Physical Convergence
Physical convergence occurs when
payloads travel over the same physical
network equipment regardless of their
service requirements
10. Device Convergence
Device convergence means the trend in
network device architecture to support
different networking paradigms in single
system.
11. Application Convergence
Application convergence represents the
appearance of applications that integrate
formerly separate functions. For example.
Web browsers allow the web pages to
carry multimedia content such as audio,
video, high-resolution graphics, virtual
reality graphics and interactive voices.
Disadvantages of Convergence:-
Convergence alters the relationship
that already exists between
industries, technologies, audiences
and markets. There is no single black
box that controls the flow of media
into our homes and workplaces. We
have entered into an era where the
media is constantly surrounding us.
Convergent Services
Convergent solutions include both
fixed line and mobile technologies.
Some Convergent services are:-
USING INTERNET FOR VOICE TELEPHONY
VIDEO ON DEMAND
FIXED-MOBILE CONVERGENCE
MOBILE-TO-MOBILE CONVERGENCE
LOCATION BASED SERVICES
