DESCRIPTION
This lesson follows on from the previous document shared on this site a few days ago. The lesson firstly aims to teach knowledge of the Kurds and Yazidis who are the two main sects in Iraq that IS is most opposed to. Secondly, the lesson aims to teach empathy especially for the children involved in the whole tragedy (see the news clip on the Yazidis and observe the children's shocked expressions). Thirdly, the lesson introduces the young people to the predicament of what to do and how it all affects us. Gung ho responses from some of the boys needs to be tempered by an informed consideration of the consequences of any heavy-handed military action. The main aim is evaluate the options such as 'Do nothing', 'Give humanitarian aid', 'Give military aid' or send British troops to fight IS. The lesson was a useful reminder of the extreme horror associated with the killings of James Foley, Stephen Sotloff and David Haines

How do Islamic State operate?
PLEASE BE SENSIBLE – EVERYTHING YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE IS HAPPENING TO HUMAN
BEINGS JUST LIKE YOU; RIGHT NOW.
James Foley
Stephen Sotloff
David Haines
Does this affect us?
So what should be done about IS?
Britain is not going to get involved in another war in
Iraq. We are not going to be sending in the British army. We should use all the assets we have to put pressure on
Islamic State and make sure it cannot cause mayhem on our
own streets.
“Our objective is clear: we will degrade, and ultimately destroy IS, through a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy…I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are. That means I will not hesitate to take action against IS in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”
What should be done about IS?There seem to be a number of options…
1. Do nothing2. Give humanitarian aid3. Give military aid4. Send British troops to
fight IS
Stick the table into your book NEATLY. Read through the statements in the speech bubbles and decide which
column they fit in.
We are not the world’s police-we shouldn’t get involved
We have a responsibility
to help the Yazidi people
We should send in British
troops-they would quickly
destroy IS
We should give food and water
but nothing more
Enough British soldiers have died recently
We should help the Kurds with weapons but nothing more
If IS aren’t stopped they could come to
Britain
Britain has its own problems-charity starts at
home
British fighter jets could
bomb IS and get rid of them
that way
The Kurds are not trained
fighters
EXTENSION: Add to your table with your own
ideas.
What should we do about The Islamic State?

• Make sure you pay attention to the success criteria
SUCCESS CRTIERIA:• Explains which of the four options
Britain should choose• Explains why the other options are not
acceptable• Uses the statements from your table in
your answer• Includes your own ideas
EXTENSION: Try and show other points of view in your answer and explain why you disagree
CLASS VOTE: What should we do about IS?
POSSIBLE OPTION NUMBER OF VOTES
