What is the Talloires Network (TN)?

• International association of institutions committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education

• Founded in 2005 in Talloires, France

• John Wood: Secretary General, Association of Commonwealth University (UK)

• Mark Gearan: Chair; President, Hobart and William Smith Colleges (USA)

• Janice Reid: Vice-Chair; Vice-Chancellor, University of Western Sydney (Australia)

• Lisa Anderson: President, American University in Cairo (Egypt)

• Scott Cowen: President, Tulane University (USA)

What Are the TN’s Goals?

• Foster connections between individuals and communities of practice to facilitate exchange of ideas and strengthen the global movement

• Generate, share, and use knowledge about university civic engagement

• Increase awareness and support for university civic engagement among communities, governments, funders and other stakeholders

to global citizenship – Provide financial support for

continued work of civic initiatives

• Funded by the MacJannet Foundation

University Volunteers Program• Pilot program launched in 2013• Funded by Santander• Hosted by TN and Universidad

Autónoma de Madrid• Goal is to promote global civic

engagement and community building through the international exchange of student volunteers within Talloires Network member institutions

Faculty and Staff Professional Development Program

• Funded by the Pearson Foundation• Supported administratively by Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP)• Specific focus audience and skills are:

– Executives (Leadership and Management Skills and Strategy) – Faculty and Staff (Best Practices, Effective Techniques, Interventions and Models)

• Goal: Impart to participants skills and knowledge to – Expand/strengthen civic engagement efforts at their universities– Develop strategies/methods to promote institutional policy change and quality

improvement

Action Research Program

• Find research opportunities with existing TN programs and activities

• 3 key areas of research• Leaders in the Civic Engagement Movement Series• Focus on 16 programs in 12 countries: Malaysia,

Mexico, Egypt, Pakistan, Australia, Scotland, Chile, U.S.A, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe
