• The coverage was extended to the entire country with rural and urban domains.

• The Villages were enumerated on sample basis. Except Tharparkar district of Sindh and Cholistan area of Punjab.

• These districts/areas were covered on 100% basis (in view of concentration of the area with respect to livestock).

• The staff of the Provincial Livestock, Dairy Development Departments, Agriculture Extension and Education Departments was used for census work,

• In big urban areas, the staff of Federal Bureau of Statistics was engaged for livestock census under supervision of their officers.

• District meetings were convened at district level to finalize the enumerator’s assignments and training arrangements.

• Criteria for NCH is as:

• All Government , Semi-government, Army livestock and dairy Farms.

• Households having 50 or more heads of cattle / buffaloes or both.

• Households having 200 (500 in case of Balochistan) or more heads of sheep / goats or both.

• Households having 25 or more heads of camels.

•Criteria for MCH in selected Mouza is as under:

• Households having 25 and above cattle, buffaloes or both.

• Households having 50 and more goats or sheep or both.

• Households having 25 or more camels.

All the listed National Certainty Holdings (NCHs) and Mouza/Village Certainty Holdings (MCHs) were enumerated on 100 % basis.

First Stage: Selection of Villages / Blocks

In rural settled areas, Villages were selected through weighted systematic random sampling technique from each district by adopting the principal of probability proportional to size according to the number of households in each Village as per 1998 Population Census.

In case of small / medium urban and unsettled rural areas, simple systematic random sampling technique was used to select Villages / Blocks separately from each of the district.

First Stage: Selection of Villages / Blocks

In big urban areas like Islamabad / Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Sargodha, Sialkot, Bahawalpur, Karachi, Hyderabad, Peshawar and Quetta, the Blocks were grouped into four categories according to the density of livestock population therein to stratify the Blocks and then a sample of Blocks was selected systematically from each stratum at different rates of selection.

Second Stage: Selection of Households From the selected Villages / Blocks of rural settled and small

/ medium urban areas, all the listed Mouza/Village Certainty Holdings (MCHs) were enumerated on 100 per cent basis.

From the remaining households a systematic sample was selected for enumeration.

In the case of unsettled rural areas and big urban areas, all the households of the selected Villages / Blocks were enumerated on 100 per cent basis.

Nomadic households happened to be in the selected Villages / Blocks during census enumeration were also enumerated on complete count basis.

Information about cattle and buffaloes by sex, breed, age distribution and use of artificial insemination was collected.

Information about the provision of veterinary cover

(vaccinated, fallen sick, treated) and factors of change in the
