The Influence of English Language on our Society

English language has changed our society. In the last few decades we have witnessed that people have adopted English language in world of communication, education, media, business and governments to make their mark in the list of those countries where the growth of this globally recognized language is continuously increasing. On the other hand, it would be wrong to say that English language has influenced the societies all across the Pakistan. There are still many areas where English language is still not understandable. It is just the matter of preference.

Although English is used as a minority language in our country but still it has managed to put a positive impact on our minds. The social media and the press in general have promoted the use of this language. Today, people are more attracted to the world of internet where there are many social platforms to get know the people around the globe. As a result there are now more exchanges between non-native speakers of English than between non-native speakers and native speakers. Its use has led to a distinct variety of English accents in our society. Thus, English no longer belongs to any particular group of people. It is the medium of instruction in most of the schools, colleges and universities. Though several languages are spoken in Pakistan, English takes the lead among the elite and government ministries. It is not the only official language of Pakistan. Urdu being our national language has its own mark and significance.

English is currently regarded as the world’s principal international language. It performs a useful function in the multilingual society. It has not undervalued our culture. People are not forced to master English at all costs. There are people who adopt English and use it alongside their own culture, and combine it with. This kind of mind-set can help us to escape from the poverty trap and catch up with developed countries rapidly. Since learning a language is a very complex phenomenon, one has to move from grammar to logic and to the philosophy of language to overcome the complexities.

English should not be viewed as something imposed from the outside, but as something belonging to, and becoming an intrinsic part of the national culture. People should be encouraged to express matters that are important to their lives, and how to confidently and effectively communicate their concerns, cultural viewpoints and personal interests by taking ownership of English and using it as a meaningful interchange with people of other countries, and to relate what it means to be a member of their specific societies and cultures in a positive way to others in the world community. If the government provide proper channels to the people of urban areas like farmers and traders who do not have any access to means of learning English then it could be the turning point in the evolution of a cultural in societies as its utility cannot be denied in today’s world.
