LightingLighting

Getting the lighting right in a horror movie is very important . Most of our movie has low lighting and some scenes are in black and white, apart from the victim scenes, which we left in colour so the effects can be more visible.

Saw 7 ComparisonOn these scenes we used medium level of lighting and a black and white effect to make people think these scenes happened in the past as the male character has been looking for the victim for a long time.

We left the victim scenes in colour with low level lighting and added a few effects to it, to make the victim look more pale and scared.

Make UpMake Up

The type of make up we used in our film is blood. This made the opening much more effective and built suspense and tension to the audience. It also allowed the audience to see that something has happened with the victim as she has been killed, rather than making the audience expect she could be saved. It was very important in our project that the audience recognizes this film from the start as a horror and not a thriller so this was the reason why we used a specific amount of blood to make the scenes look gory.

ClothingClothing

We have used general clothing with no branding on the actors. This was to show that the events that are happening in our opening, can happen to anyone else, which gives our film a sense of realism.

MusicMusic

It was a bit difficult to get our music right as we were looking for one that could fit with our story, as we have no talking in it. In the end we have found a perfect piece, which was very obvious that it was a horror track and added a lot of suspense and tension to our opening. The music draws you in and gets you to understand what is happening in the opening at some points in it. For example when the victim screams, there is an evil laugh in the background which builds tension for the audience and gets them to understand that there is a rapist/murderer involved in the opening. And also when the boy/brother gets into the church and falls down onto his knees, there is a freaky character in the background speaking, followed by a cut on to the victim which we can all see is already dead with the previous evil laugh in the background. This makes the audience understand that there is a murderer involved.

Our opening is not very much based on the usual horror movies ( e.g. Blonde dies first, brunette/virgin survives.) In our opening a very innocent looking brunette girl dies and it is the boy that survives. I believe that this works very well with our opening and makes the film much more realistic and also creates much more tension.
