Education and career pathways are an integrated collection of programs and services intended to develop students’ core academic, technical, and employability skills; provide them with continuous education and training; and place them in high-demand, high-opportunity jobs. Illinois Pathways builds off the National Career Clusters® Framework and supports career pathway systems in STEM application areas.

The pathways are a basis for clusters of specific occupations or careers grouped together because they share similar interests, strengths, and skills.

EDUCATION AND CAREER PATHWAYS

A pathway is a sequence of programs or courses and work-based learning experiences that connect career interests from high school to college and career.

Used as an educational road map that guides students from high school courses through post-secondary options most relevant to a chosen career destination.

Helps students acquire the depth of knowledge and skills, linked with specific post-secondary programs, that will lead to a certificate or degree, as well as a variety of specific occupational choices, each requiring different levels of education and training.

Provides maximum flexibility in the career decision-making process, allowing students to move between pathways at any time without gaps or penalties.

Provides a way for students to discover the relevance of their selected school courses to actual occupations and careers.

Programs/Courses - Obtained through the following sources to include approved credit-bearing course or post-secondary program that embodies a set of learning activities which culminate in the mastery of standards.

• Illinois State Board of Education (orientation and high school levels) – provides course numbers from the Illinois State Course System (ISCS). http://www.isbe.net/ISCS/

• Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) (postsecondary levels) - provides a taxonomic scheme that supports the accurate tracking and reporting of fields of study and program completion activity.  https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/Default.aspx?y=55
