My name is Joe
I spend most of my time lately studying reading
practicing Judorunning
and counting down the days until I graduate
I'm JoeI was born in Madisonville, KY, a coal mining town.
Not many people have heard of it, and it's easy to understand why
Later on I moved to Georgetown KY in the middle of bluegrass country. It's a place so dedicated to farming that
we have an annual "festival of the horse"Despite all of that, I have never ridden a horse...
Finally I wound up in the "big city" of Lexington KY. While it's somewhere people can find on a map it's still not right for me.
I plan to graduate in December 2011from the university of Kentucky with a degree in Psychology and anthropology
Psychology = The study of behavior and ways of thinking
Anthropology = The study of people. Culture, archaeology, linguistics, and human biology.
A lot of people seem to think my majors were a waste of time....But I can't imagine a more rewarding use of my time
While other people were taking a safer route, I have grown as a person and been able to do what I love. That includes
Studying 4 languages Designing a museum exhibit Learning how to identify race, age, and gender from a skull Interviewing a war survivor Studied and wrote about a sorority Spending a semester studying Lebanon Writing an ethnography Studying neuropsychology Courses related to Islam, Arabic, and Muslim culture Visiting a Mosque Researched and wrote about ancient warfare practicesReading and writing about everything from criminals to nomads
I've spent a year on the Dean's list, and have had opportunities to explore more fields than I could have asked for.
During my time at UK I've held jobs where I
Stocked frozen foodAided attorneys and made deliveries to Doctors
Worked for the Department of Explosives and Blasting
And soon I'll begin work at a primate rescue center
What describes me?Adaptable
Mindful
Self motivated
Compassionate
Able to relate to and understand people
Focused
And most of allEager to learn about and interact with other cultures
Despite my best planning....
I'm at a bit of a fork in the road
I'm still not sure exactly sure where I'm going...I could work in...
Contract ArchaeologyCounseling Psychology
A nonprofit helping Middle Easterners or refugees of war Primatology
Human ResourcesCreative Writing
MarketingAnd a thousand other exciting fields
Some people might feel like I have too wide a past
But I feel like my unique set of skills puts me into the perfect position for museum work
I've learned about several social sciencesI've been exposed to many cultures
I understand archaeologyBiology
Primate behaviorPsychology
StatisticsHistory
And I've taken courses specifically regarding museums.
Some people might find all of those options daunting, and it certainly can seem that way...
But I'm excited for the options available to me.
There's a whole world out there left for me to explore
and I'm ready to take on whatever obstacles are ahead
