The Human Resources of the Philippines

Aside from natural resources is one of the basis of economic development. Its people is the most important resource of any country.

It is important to understand how people utilize and develop natural resources based on their character, diligence, and creativity. In fact, humans serve as the “driver” of the world since the direction of it depends on

them.

Population Population means the number of persons

living in a certain place. The issue of population is important in the national

government. We already know that rapid population growth is critical in the rapid

depletion of natural resources, and large population means widespread use of natural

resources,meaning, large number of population is like slow development of a

country. Thus, less population is better than a big number of population in a place.

The composition of the population has also an impact in the nature of national policies and the focus of the government. This can also give us an idea of a country’s potential in terms of economic development. As more

are born and few die, the supplies of natural resources will start to run out. You will see a table in the next slide about an estimate of the total population of the Philippines by

gender and age as of 2004.

Health

The government considers health as one of the major issues that need to be addressed.

Healthy people are the wealth of a nation that is why health should be given its much deserved attention. When we speak of

health, we need to know the “FERTILITY RATE”, “DEATH RATE”, and “LIFE

EXPECTANCY RATE” of the Filipinos.

Fertility Rate

It means the number of live births per 1,000 women who are in the

reproductive age of 15 to 49 years old. According to estimates in 2003,

3.54 infants are born in the Philippines every minute. You will see a table about this in the next

slide.

Birth RateIt refers to the number of infants born in a

given period of time. This is expressed as the number of live births for every 1,000

population in one year. More often than not, birth rate remains high in poor countries, but in rich countries, the birth rate is low due to

improved lifestyle, effective use of contraceptives, high infant morality or no. of infants that die at birth or stillborn, and less

natural resources used because of less babies born.

Death RateIt refers to the total number of those who

died in the total population in one particular place in one year.Sometimes, it is expressed

through the number of those who died in every 1,000 population in one year. High

death rate might mean lack of needed medical attention and technology in a given country. In our country, the ratio is 5.53 for every 1,000 population in 1 year acc. To an

estimate in the year of 2004.

Life Expectancy

Life Expectancy means the expected life span of the citizens in a particular or given country. This Life Expectancy may actually serve as an indicator of the state of development or

improvement of a country. If life expectancy in a country is long, this means that there’s

technological and medical progress in that country.You will see a table in the next slide

that shows that women have longer life expectancy than men in the Philippines.

EDUCATIONAn educated citizenry is a nations wealth.

This is precisely the reason why th government should prioritize the education of

its people. Education gives the people the chance to complete in the field of labor. The

Phil. has one of the highest literacy rates among Asian nations. Literacy Rate refers to the number of citizens aged ten above who knows how to read and write. It is estimated that 94.9% of Filipinos are literate. You will

see a table about the literacy rate of Filipinos.

ECONOMYThe economy of a nation determines the direction it will take in the future. If there is economic development, this means a prosperous life for citizens. It is important to bear in

mind that the citizenry is the key to economic development since the

people are the ones who compose the labor force of a country.

Employment

The fact that there are college graduates that are unemployed is a very common

knowledge here in the Philippines. Unemployment is certainly one of the most pressing problems in the country

at present. No jobs mean almost no money for the family of a citizen without

a job, so jobs are very important in a family.

MIGRATIONMigration is one of the realities in the

Philippines at present. Migration refers to the movement of people from one region to

another region or city. Migration from rural to urban areas has made the National Capital Region the highest populated region among

all regions in the Philippines. Migration to cities is a result of the desire to find

employment. The result of migration is the rise of population in the cities of the

Philippines. So most will say that migration is not good for other people here in the

Philippines.
