‘COLORYOUR KITE’

The ContextKampong PONDOK PUCUNG, Tangerang, INDONESIA – The Kampong is the remaining local kampong (traditional/native settlement) now surrounded by the mega modern real estate development . As any kampong in Jakarta it lacked and far of being well developed. It has no proper roads, sewer system, utilization, sanitation, and garbage disposal system, thus resulted on community ignorance or at best tried conventionally managed it (i.e: burning the garbage, made a traditional embankment – empang for the human waste disposal, etc.).

THE CHALLENGEHow might we encourage good garbage dumping habits among

undeserved children in Kampong Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA?

Start easyBuild casual conversation,Personal Data, Living Period

Then go deepAlways connect to garbage problems and children activities

Memory, Past – What was then? How’s the situation back then? Reality, Now – Ask them to make comparison between the past and nowadays situationImagine, Future – Ask them to imagine ideal situation for their kampong’s

Why don’t we conduct the research - asking the questions WITHIN AN EVENT! (that way we hope to get an honest answers from the community)

So, DAG decide to CREATE an event, using the ‘NOW’ popular playing activity done by the children within the community: playing KITE

Thus, we make ‘COLOR YOUR KITE’ day (already permitted by the community leader) on THURSDAY, 17th April, 2014, while in the same time conducting our research

Then comes OUR CRAZY IDEA

ExpertsChildren Psychologist. Children attitude formed by Nature and Nurture (Albert Bandura), in which happened simultaneously. Children will follow their leader (parents, teacher, children older etc.)/ anyone worth as an exemplar. Children can play anywhere, anytime. Children are competitive. One of the most fruitful strategy is by implementing reward (positive reinforcement) and punishment (negative reinforcement) strategy.

Tangerang, INDONESIA?

Nowadays educator tends towards the positive reinforcement – here comes the PLAYING activities. Children will enthusiastically participate in GAMES! Wrap your messages in FUN activities!! Combine all that and you will have a peek inside their mind.Community Based Anthropologist. Building an awareness within a community is depending on framing the problem right., and you need time before you get into that. Defer premature judgment. Local Garbage Compound. Domestic garbage is not attractive for them, unless it is already being collected and sorted thus quite extensive in its volume and amount. They prefer aimed for big or medium scale retail garbage.Garbage Picker also act as an Extreme Users. They only collect hard Pbm (Plastic Based Material) and dry thick paper based domestic garbage. These then will be sold to Local Garbage Compound. Although relatively small, but each domestic garbage does have financial value. Combine it and doing it continuously, then it will have suitable economic value for improvement.

The VALUABEL INSIGHT. Children do not care where to play and expand their imagination and exercise their never ceased creativities. They can play anywhere, from garbage dumping site to malls. They also can play anything and with anything.

The Results summary. There is unique connection between the natives and the temporal dweller. Regarding the garbage problem most of them think that it is not a big problem, as the garbage will always be gone the next day, cleaned by the owner of the house in front of the road where they littered. The garbage usually collected by each native’s clan and then get burned down. The children actually have the awareness of not littering but still doing it because others did. Both of the children and the parents are all excited of having communal activities.

The Action. We conduct our research to the community through the kite coloring activity. During the activities, our team asked the children and their parents who accompanied them about the garbage problem and the dumping habits. At the end of the activities we asked the children to collect the garbage produced by it. They are all very excited to do that. We then closed the event with message ‘Playing is fun, so keep your playing area clean!’

REFLECTION:• Do collaboratively and in team!, then nothing is impossible –

within + a week we managed to do our research in the community, talking to experts, immersed within the context and expanding by thinking out of the box by doing analogous research! Even better we managed to do our research in the community by making AN EVENT! –conceived, prepared and put it into action only within 5 days (from Saturday, 12th Apr. to Thursday, 17th Apr., 2014).

• Working with Community showed us: that community member always eager to help, to share, to interact and to participate!
