Giving kids a proper education isn’t easy. It takes lots of effort and attention from teachers, administrators, and parents to teach even one child the knowledge and skills they need in order to be prepared for adulthood. Expand that effort out to the hundreds or thousands of kids who pass through a school every year and you have a monumental task that is no easy feat to accomplish.

Given the difficulty involved in educating students, any tool that makes providing that education more efficient is bound to be a boon not just to educators and parents but to kids as well.

But what do these efficiency-enhancing tools look like? All across the country, teachers, parents, and students are utilizing technology such as smartphones, tablets, and computers to make the education process more responsive, nimble, and interactive.

According the U.S. Department of Education, 48 states and the District of Columbia currently support some form of online learning opportunity. This can include providing supplemental and after-school learning materials, making AP or remedial classes available to students, credit recovery opportunities, and more.1 Some of these virtual learning classes are “homegrown,” while others are made available by contracting with third-party education companies.

Modern digital technology, including smartphones and tablets, are already recognized for their ability to allow people to perform some tasks more efficiently, and these technologies are already finding a place in many classrooms.

According to a recent study, 73% of Advanced Placement (AP) and National Writing Project (NWP) teachers said that they or their students have used their mobile phones in the classroom or to complete assignments, while 45% report using e-readers.2

According to teachers, technology in the classroom has caused a noticeable improvement in their ability to teach.

• 92% of AP and NWP teachers surveyed said the internet had a “major impact” on their ability to access content, resources, and materials related to their teaching.

• 68% said the internet had a “major impact” on their ability to share ideas with fellow teachers.

• 67% said that the internet had a “major impact” on their ability to interact with parents.

• 57% said the same about the internet’s ability to interact with their students.2

Given how quickly technology has found a place in the classroom among both students and their teachers, education-focused technology has the power to make teaching students a more efficient task. While technology can’t do everything, it can serve as an effective tool in the learning process and the education system, as shown by feedback from teachers themselves.
