How Digital Economy affects education practices

Education which is the process of formally or informally facilitating learning, by which knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits of a group of people are transferred to other people, through storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, or research is also now impacted by the digital economy. For Mrs Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth “The world of education is changing radically, from primary school to university and beyond: regardless of the age of learners, educational content based on open technologies will soon be unavoidable and not just useful” We can clearly and easily identify 4 innovative practices

Serious Games

Serious Game is a tool using the new technologies in the specific intention to deliver a message in an attractive way. This message can be of educational, informative, advertising, communicative order or training, while having the playful aspect pulled by the classic video game or using the simulation.

MOOCs

A massive open online course (MOOC) is a free Web-based distance learning program that is designed for the participation of large numbers of geographically dispersed students.

Mobile learning

M-learning or mobile learning is defined as "learning across multiple contexts, through social and content interactions, using personal electronic devices

Cloud computing

The cloud allows us to access our work anywhere, anytime and share it with anyone. It frees us from needing a particular machine to access a file or an application like a word processor or spreadsheet program. A comparison between the traditional education and innovative practices show us that digital is transforming the education. Some practices of traditional education are substituted (See table below).

We have more and more recognition of these types of Innovations by company and School. For example, Central Lille, Harvard, MIT or Skema business School give credit for their MOOC. Coursera has a recruitment services on the platform for companies.

"My dream is that every class goes digital by 2020. The education must be connected to real life, it can't evolve into a parallel World” said Mrs Neelie Kroes, Vice-president of the European Commission in charge of the digital strategy
