ONE LIBRARY – MANY LOCATIONS

Aarhus University Libraries is the official, collective name of all the libraries at Aarhus University and the State and University Library. We work together to provide library services for all employees and students at Aarhus University.

We have 17 locations in Denmark and about 110 employees.

If you are not from Aarhus University it is still possible to use the library. Most service locations are open to all.

AU LIBRARY VS. BLACKBOARD

Until the summer of 2014, the AU made use of several different LMS systems, including Blackboard. The library was part of the team that helped test and implement Blackboard at AU and we, therefore, have a long-standing involvement in LMS system development at the AU.

It was decided that the AU should have a single, common LMS and following a tendering process, Blackboard was chosen as supplier of the system.

In order to meet deadlines, ensure further development, etc. the work involved in the implementation of Blackboard was organized as follows:

A general steering committee consisting of vice-deans, deputy directors and program managers.

Project leader forum, consisting of project leaders from the 4 faculties, the program leader and a representative from AU Library

4 local implementation groups – 1 per. faculty. Each group consists of a program leader, a project leader, a director of studies from the different faculties and a representative from AU Library

AU Library has been able to get members into the project leader forum and in the individual implementation units. This has given us a unique opportunity to draw attention to what we as a library can offer this project, and an opportunity to be part of it from the very start. It has required resources to be represented in these forums and participate in meetings that could often be irrelevant to the library, but in the end our continuing presence has paid off, as the AU Library is now in the thoughts of most directors of studies, vice-deans and project leaders.

AU LIBRARY IN BLACKBOARD

When Blackboard was launched at AU, the AU Library was already part of the students' Blackboard solution.

The examples here are from the Faculty of ARTS - students from other faculties have a customized AU Library page where the list of databases is tailored to their students.

Our work going forward will be to be more present in the individual courses in Blackboard

OUR AIM – EMBEDDED LIBRARY

Whenever you enter a university, the library is there somewhere amongst the university buildings.

We aim to secure the same experience, when you enter the digital ”buildings”, the LMS.

The library resources should be accessible right when and where you need them.

The librarian’s skills should be clear and visible, so that you know when to address them for help rather than your tutor, peers, IT department, Google, etc.

We are working on converting our products from modules into content in the content collection areas, because our teachers simply don’t use module pages on their courses.

HOW - TECHNICALITIES

We have chosen the role of ”Instructor”, whenever we enrole in a course.

Librarians are administrators, in order to be able to quick enroll courses and in order to create modules.

This has been debated with the pedagogical centres, and it’s the most seem less way of working. There has been no insidents to considering doing it with less authority.
