These gruesome-looking creatures that form part of the guttersystem of medieval cathedrals have an interesting etymologicalhistory; one that is intertwined with myth and folklore.According to myth, in the 7th century a dragon, namedGargouille--literally throat, rose from the waters of the SeineRiver in France. Unlike the typical dragons of mythology, thisone did not breathe fire, but rather was a water dragon. Themonster proceeded to lay waste to the countryside around Parisby drowning it. St. Romain, the Archbishop of Rouen, accompanied only by a condemned prisoner, set out to stop thebeast. Upon confronting the monster, the good saint formed across with his two index fingers, taming Gargouille. The dragonwas led back to Paris, where it was slain and burned. The head, however, was saved and mounted on a building. In commemoration of this event, architects began to designgutter spouts in the shape of Gargouille, and eventually in theshape of all manner of bizarre creatures. So, gargoyle is the English spelling of the French gargouille, which in turn derives from the Latin gurges, and ultimately fromthe Indo-European root *gwel-, meaning to swallow. That root isprobably an imitation of the sound made while swallowing, andits also the root of many other English words, such as gargle, gurgle, gorge, regurgitate, gullet, and glutton. 153.
