Welcome to Hotel ICON’s Internship Program (WIE) Yearbook!

The WIE program was set up to give our students opportunities for access to invaluable working experience in Hotel ICON by practicing what they learn

ed from class into the real world. If you could intern once, we can agree that Hotel ICON is the best place to do it since Hotel ICON is a hotel unlike any

other. It is all about individuality and a celebration of Hong Kong’s finest. And As the world’s first co-located, co-

lead program offered in a teaching and research hotel -

Hotel ICON believes in the future of Asian hospitality and provides a dynamic environment to inspiring a new generation of passionate pioneering hoteli

ers and students who will one day take their positions as leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry

This yearbook outlines some of the feedback from the intern students in 2012 about their experiences, and provides a valuable record of how fruitful inter

nship experience can be.

We would like to extend a very special ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to putting this publication together and for sharing details of your experi

ence so generously.

Yours Truly,

THE UNIQUE INTERNSHIP OF

LIFE TIME

What was your intern project? “America’s Test Kitchen

Food & Friends Dinner Parties.” America’s Test Kitchen re-

cently published their Menu Cookbook and I needed a way to

show off what the book was capable of. We asked bloggers

across North America to help us host an America’s Test

Kitchen dinner party using the cookbook. After going

through numerous applicants, I narrowed the field down to

six lucky bloggers. Every week, a blogger shared their ex-

perience using the book and had their post featured on The

Feed.

What did you learn from the project? I learned that mail-

ing packages to Canada and rack of lamb dinners can get

really expensive.

What was your favorite part of the internship? Besides

living the dream in Boston and working for a brand I abso-

lutely adore? Working with Steph and the rest of new media

tree house. Every day I learned something new and was

amazed by all of the hard work, passion and knowledge my

co-workers bestowed upon me. The taste tests were cool too.

What advice would you give to applicants and future in-

terns? If you have a passion for food and social media, you

are going to love this experience. Take it all in because that

three months goes by fast. Go to all of the taste tests and stick

around for the discussions, you’re going to be blown away by

the knowledge that gets passed around.

THE UNIQUE PRACTICE

ENVIRONMENT

Welcome to the Department of Computing and Mathematics,

Schools Liaison Initiative.

During the past few years the Department has been actively

engaged in enhancing links with local schools and colleges and

our visits have proved very popular.

You can find some of the schools and colleges that we have

given talks to and their comments by following the Schools

Visited link.

This initiative is constantly evolving and currently we offer a

program of free talks aimed at 6th form students at schools/

colleges within a 20 mile radius of Manchester city centre.

However, if your college is further afield and you would be

interested in a talk, please contact us so we can discuss your

requirements.

If you look at our Talks or Workshop links you will see the va-

riety of talks that we offer at the moment. Some of the talks

support a Public Understanding of Science and can be tailored

to suit different audiences. The list is not static and new talks

will be added as they become available.
