Horror then and nowBy Jack Jackson
A genre and its developments Genres are not static, they move with societies
needs and expectations and therefore changes to fit this
For example, the genre of social realism has changed a lot over the years, there is a very notable difference between passport to Pimlico and ill manors.
If the genre did not “change with the times” it will fail to engage the audience and they will lose enthusiasm.
Horror Horror has changed over time. It is the
most developed movie reason being is that each generation finds different things “scary” and frightening. For example in the 1960s Dracula was considered as “scary” due to it being about the supernatural, this at the time was unheard of. The generation of today would see Dracula not as scary due them being aware of supernatural beings.
What did they think of them then? People saw films like the curse of
Frankenstein as very frightening as it was based around the unknown. No one knew if this was possible and played on their darkest fears of it actually happening.
What do they think of them now? Horror movies today still use the same
conventions such as the supernatural and the terror of the unknown but today it’s a bit different. With the improvement of technology, Horror films like pulse and one missed called are scaring audiences on their phones unlike the 80s horror film Christine which is about a possessed car.
The differences Horror has clearly developed which you
can see from these examples
King Kong 1933
The wolf man 1941
The beast from two thousand fathoms 1953
The wasp women 1960
Jaws 1975
The shining 1980
Seven 1995
Final destination 2000
