The education system in England

• Children start in Reception in the year that they turn 5 (This is called ‘The Foundation Stage’)

• After The Foundation Stage, children move into Key Stage One (Year 1 and Year 2)

• After Key Stage One, children move into Key Stage Two (Years 3 to 6)

• Children are taught a National Curriculum, which has statutory requirements for each subject.

• At the end of Key Stage 2, children have to sit national tests in English and Maths. The results of these tests are published and schools are placed into league tables. This is very controversial!

• Children stay at a primary school until the age of 11, after which they move to secondary school until the age of 16. After this age, children can do A-Levels before possibly moving onto university.

• Schools are inspected every 3-5 years, depending on how successful they are.
