• Herbal medicines are drugs made from plants and other natural products.• They work in a similar
manner as conventional drugs(allopathic medicines). This makes herbal medicines as effective as allopathic medicines.
Turmeric
Turmeric
• Turmeric is a rhizomatous plant of the ginger family.
• In the Ayurvedic system turmeric is a medicine for diseases and conditions, including those of the skin, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal systems, aches, pains, wounds, sprains, and liver disorders.
• A fresh juice is commonly used in many skin conditions, including eczema, chicken pox, allergy, and scabies.
• The active compound curcumin is known to have a wide range of biological effects including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, antibacterial, and antiviral activities, which indicate huge potential in clinical medicine.
• Hydrogen peroxide and boric acid have similar antiseptic qualities like turmeric.
• Boric acid is used in eyewashes and put into creams for burns.
• Hydrogen peroxide is used to clean & deodorize wounds and ulcers.
Honey
Honey• As an antimicrobial agent honey is
useful in treating a variety of ailments.
• Antibacterial properties of honey are the result of the low water activity causing osmosis, chelation of free iron, its slow release of hydrogen peroxide.
• Antioxidants in honey have even been associated with reducing the damage done to the colon in colitis.
• It has also been used for centuries as a treatment for sore throats and coughs and, according to recent research, may be an effective soothing agent for coughs.
•Alpha lipoic acid is a chemical which has similar antioxidant properties like honey.
•Hydrogen peroxide is also a chemical substitute for honey.
Cinnamon

• Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum.
• Cinnamon oil helps in relieving dental pain and also used in toothpastes.
• Including cinnamon and cinnamon extract in the diet may help type 2 diabetics to control blood glucose levels.
• Dietary cinnamon activates dependent antioxidant response in human epithelial colon cells and used as chemopreventive dietary factor targeting colorectal carcinogenesis.
• A substance in the cinnamon plant inhibits the development of Alzheimer's disease .
•Anodyne can be used as a substitute for cinnamon as it has pain killing properties.
•Fluorouracil is also a substitute used in colorectal cancer.
Tulsi
Tulsi
• It is an aromatic plant of the genus ocimum.
• It helps in reduction of cholesterol level.
• It can be used as a painkiller because of high concentration of eugenol.
• It also protects from radiation poisoning & cataract.
• Tulsi increases immunity.
•Paracetamol is an anti pyretic and analgesic(painkiller) and used as a chemical substitute for tulsi.
•Antigens can also be used as substitutes as they increase immunity.
Aloe vera
Aloe Vera
• Oral administration of aloe vera might be effective in reducing blood glucose in diabetic patients and in lowering blood lipid levels in hyperlipidaemia.
• It might be useful for treating psoriasis.
• Niacin (also known as Vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid) can be used as a substitute for aloe vera as it lowers lipid levels.
• Coal tar and Vitamin D3 are also substitutes for aloe vera.
Fennel
Fennel
• Fennel is a plant species in the genus Foeniculum It is a member of the family Apiaceae.
• Fennel water has properties similar to those of anise and dill water: it can be used as the domestic ‘gripe water’.
• They are also eaten raw, sometimes with some sweetener, as they are said to improve eyesight.
• Root extracts were often used in tonics to clear cloudy eyes.
• Extracts of fennel seed have shown to have a potential use in the treatment of glaucoma.
• Fennel may be an effective diuretic and a potential drug for treatment of hypertension.
• Torasemide is a loop diuretic mainly for the management of hypertension. It is marketed under the brand name Demadex and Examide.
• It is a substitute for fennel as it has anti-hypertensive properties.
Fenugreek

• It is an annual plant from the family Fabaceae.
• Its seeds are useful in curing Diabetes(type 1 and type 2).
• It also has anti-inflammatory properties
• Mefenamic acid is substitute for fenugreek as it decreases inflammation.
• Metformin is used to lower insulin levels.
ginger

• Ginger is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber.
• Tea brewed from ginger is a common folk remedy for colds.
• Ginger ale and ginger beer are also drunk as stomach settlers in countries where the beverages are made.
• In Burma, ginger and a local sweetener made from palm tree juice are boiled together and taken to prevent the flu.
• It is used as a herbal preparation to reduce fatigue, prevent and cure rheumatism and osteoarthritis and control poor dietary habits.
• Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for pain relief, fever reduction, and against swelling.
• It is also used for treating osteoarthritis.
• Ascorbic acid is effective for treating common cold and hence is a substitute for ginger.

• Colitis is the inflammation of colon which is a part of large intestine.
