Topics for Tonight
E-books that are viewed online only. These are not available if you are not connected to the Internet.
E-books that may be viewed either online or downloaded to your computer & e-reader. (Project Gutenberg & some free Google books)
E-books that are designed to be downloaded and read off-line on your e-readers. (Overdrive and those purchased from Amazon or Barnes and Noble)
Different Kinds of E-Books
E-ink readers – Least expensive, black & white only, limited or no browser, long battery life.
Color e-readers from Amazon (Kindles) or Barnes and Noble (Nooks).
Color tablets from 3rd party vendors such as Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, Apple iPad.
Smart phones that have good displays.
Different Kinds of E-Readers
PDL is part of a 24-member consortium for e-books and audio e-books.
These books are provided by OverDrive in several formats: EPUB, Kindle & PDF for e-readers and WMA & MP3 for iPods and MP3 players.
E-books are single user licenses, so you must place a hold on books that are “checked out” electronically.
Books are checked out for either 7 or 14 days
Downloading E-Books from PDL
Not every book published is also sold in e-book format. Not every e-book sold on Amazon or Barnes and Noble
is available to license to libraries. Only a few major publishers will work with OverDrive
at this time. Cost of licensing e-books & e-audiobooks is much
higher to libraries than individuals. (Average cost of a Gresham book is $85. Average cost of an e-audiobook is $95.)
Realities of E-Book Availabilty
PDL purchases additional copies of popular books that are available ONLY to our residents.
You MUST log in first to see if a book is an Advantage title.
Waiting list is much shorter than you see!
