What is Virtual Reality (VR) ?
• Virtual Reality is a computer generated, multi-sensory information program which tracks a user in real time i.e. computer system is used to create an artificial world in which the user has the impression of being in that world ,with the ability to navigate through and manipulate objects in that world.
Virtual Reality Concepts
• The concepts behind virtual reality are based upon theories about :• A long held human desire to escape the boundaries of the ‘real world’ by
embracing cyberspace.
• Once there we can interact with this virtual environment in a more naturalistic manner which will generate new forms of human-machine interaction (HMI).
Augmented (AR) & Mixed Reality (MR)
Augmented Reality (AR)
• Refers to a system in which the user views and acts within anenhanced version of the real world. The enhancements are virtual(computer- generated), and can include objects or information.
Mixed Reality (MR)
• sometimes referred to as hybrid reality
• encompassing both augmented reality and augmented virtuality
• refers to the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce newenvironments and visualisations where physical and digital objectsco-exist and interact in real time

AR/MR Application Areas…
• Maintenance
• Training
• Tourism/ Cultural Heritage
• Design / Construction
• Battlefield Information Display
Used in Sports
AR IN GAMES
TYPES OF AR
Marker-based AR
Markerless AR
GPS & Compass Technology
MARKER BASED
Marker-based AR uses a camera and a visual marker to determine the center, orientation, and range of its spherical coordinate system.
Most of the time, the applications using markers are based on open source technology.
ARToolkit is the first fully-featured toolkit for marker-based AR
It has the advantage to be easily affordable but sometimes it is not supported and fairly weak
Total Immersion provides the world’s most widely used commercial augmented reality platform.
TYPES OF AUGMENTED REALITY
MARKER LESS TRACKING
This is currently one of the best technology for tracking
It performs active tracking and recognition of real environment on any type of support without using special placed markers.
Allows more complex applications of Augmented Reality.
GPS and Compass Technology :
Found in smartphones and tablets Uses devices' GPS, compass features
and high-speed wireless networks Allows more complex applications of Augmented Reality.
Main Attraction: Limitation:
Provides useful local web-content information and added services in 2D format at the geo-location of the user
Fairly imprecise due to current inaccuracy of the GPS technology
Used in Aircraft
Used in Movies
Medical Applications
• A research team used Augmented Reality to cope with a 25-year-old woman’s cockroach phobia. Virtual cockroaches were displayed on the woman’s hands. After some sessions, her phobia for cockroaches has been eliminated.
Characteristics of AR
It combines real and virtual World
It is interactive in real time
It is registered in 3D.
Hardware needed for AR….
Display
Tracking (GPS, compass)
Input devices (Camera)
sensors (accelerometer)
processer (CPU, any operating system or software)
GOOGLE GLASS
Google Glass is a wearable
computer with an optical head
mounted display (OHMD). It was
developed by Google.
Using Augmented Reality
Technology.
EARTHMINE
Company uses vehicle
mounted camera.
Capture imagery and three
dimensional data.
Get information from GPS
intelligent software.

Advantages of AR
AR Improve interaction
Advances in technology
Military Trainings which could be less expensive
Rapid augmentation in tourism.
Effective in Medical Field.
Easy to locate desired places.
A Good way of teaching.
Increased the learning abilities.
Disadvantages of AR
o Three dimensional, real-time running augmented reality programs like "first person shooters" have been believed to increase teen aggression because they normalize violence.
o The lack of privacy.
o Difficult to maintain Augmented Reality Systems.
o Augmented reality is leading to an era of no privacy, where criminals could simply point their phone at victims and learn anything they need to know about them.
• Google Glasses and Augmented ID or any other face detection application effect the privacy of humans.
CONCLUSION
• Augmented reality (AR) is a way of delivering entertainment media that uses computer generated graphics transposed over real-life scenes.
• Create a system such that User CANNOT tell the difference between the real world and the virtual augmentation of it.
• To add information and meaning to a real object or place.
• Use of Medical Application increased and save the life of humans.
• But developers should controls the privacy. People thinks Augmented reality is leading to an era of no privacy, where criminals could simply point their phone at victims and learn anything they need to know about them.
