Carrying The state of Louisiana recognizes open

carry. No person shall carry a concealed

firearm intentionally without a permit unless one is a peace officer in performance of his or her official duties.

Concealed Handgun Definition  Any handgun as defined in R.S.

40:1379.3(J)(1), which is carried on a person in such a manner as to hide or obscure the handgun from plain view.

  In a pocket or purse or on a belt clip or in a concealed holster.

Openly carrying a firearm in public “Open Carry”   The act of publicly carrying a

firearm in plain sight. Plain sight is broadly defined as not being hidden from common observation

  School zones (if you are not in your vehicle, or on private property), government (state and local) buildings, and any private property that posts signs expressly forbidding the carrying of firearms

To qualify for a concealed handgun permit, a Louisiana resident shall:   Make sworn application to the deputy secretary of public safety

services of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections   Be a resident of the state   Be twenty-one years of age or older.   Not suffer from a mental or physical infirmity due to disease,

illness, or retardation which prevents the safe handling of a handgun.

  Not be ineligible to possess a firearm by virtue of having been convicted of a felony

  Not have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to or been found guilty of a crime of violence as defined in R.S. 14:2 at the misdemeanor level

Possession No state permit is required to possess a rifle, shotgun,

or a handgun. 

A person cannot own a firearm for a period of ten years from the date of completion of the prison sentence, probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

Prohibited Locations to Carry a Gun R.S. 40:1379.3 (N) states that no concealed handgun may be

carried into and no concealed handgun permit issued pursuant to this Section shall authorize or entitle a permittee to carry a concealed handgun in any of the following:

Prohibited Locations to Carry a Gun Continued   A law enforcement office, station, or building;   A meeting place of the governing authority of a political

subdivision;   The state capitol building

Prohibited Locations to Carry a Gun Continued   Any school "firearm free zone" as defined in R.S.

14:95.6.   Any church, synagogue, mosque or similar place of

worship;   A parade or demonstration for which a permit is issued

by a governmental entity;

Prohibited Locations to Carry a Gun Continued   Any portion of an airport facility where the carrying of

firearms is prohibited under federal law, except that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, if the firearm is encased for shipment, for the purpose of checking such firearm as lawful baggage;

 No individual to whom a concealed handgun permit is issued may carry such concealed handgun into the private residence of another without first receiving the consent of that person.
