Running along articles, above the masthead there’s advertisers to present to the audience what’s inside the

magazine.

‘Learn to play’ this is interactive with

the audience.

‘Play better now’ persuasive writing, any one who is already thinking of playing guitar could be persuaded

by this to buy the magazine.

The masthead is bold and white, connoting the

innocence of the music and purity of the magazine. Also

it captures the audiences attention by the contrast of

bold white on black.

The masthead is interrupted by the front

image, this suggests the magazine title is known and that the image following is of more importance. There is immediate

importance and significance of the text box; it’s coloured red

which connotes emergency and attention. It’s also one of the larger notification on the front

page.

There’s a puff which is advertising the

interviews in the magazine and who the interviews are with.

The text box reading ‘songwriting secretes of the

masters’ overlaps the picture of the artist. This shows that

the text must be more important because the image is usually the main focus/body

of the magazine.

There is a freebie being advertised, this will lure

the audience in to buying the magazine.

It’s a extra magazine on guitars which links to the actual magazine.

There is a list of features in the magazine on a left flush, where it’s following convention by structure.

There is a set design/style of the

magazine, black and red are followed

throughout the front cover. This fits with the

genre as it’s a rock magazine. Red

connotes danger and black is related and

linked to badness and rebels.

The male in the image is wearing black, this connotes that he is

rebellious and fits the stereotype of the typical rock boy. He has visible

tattoos along with leather straps on his guitar and badges and studs on his

waist coat.

Flash right- showing the

feature artists in the

magazine.

Page 5: Guitar Magazine Evaluation

Repeated image from the front cover,

showing he is one of the main features of the magazine. It’s also been enlarged

on the contest page, showing its

significance.

The house style of the magazine is

consistent throughout the

contents page, the red, black and

white. The page numbers are highlighted with a red tag,

making it clear to navigate the page

of the article.

The article has been separated from the contents page list,

highlighting the page number and caption

separately. This could help the audience

find this article quicker.

The white background helps the audience view

the writing and articles easier. It

also gives the magazine a fresh

looking style, along with a open tone. The heading of each article is bold and black, maybe a font or two bigger than the following

style. There’s a small

description/summary of the article- to

inform the audience.

The heading of the article isn't bold and black like the others, its all in white writing-

showing its importance again.

There’s smaller pictures running

along the bottom of the contents page, they're all feature articles- therefore they gain a larger

image/pitch.

Page 6: Guitar Magazine Evaluation

The ratio of images to writing is about 60:40,

more images than writing but not by

much.

There is the advertising of the

guitar bass magazine again,

repeated from the front cover

The colour scheme changed on this page, it’s yellow

and blue, this still links to the front cover colours.

The images are very instrument based,

representing how the magazine is about

music. The section on the page says

‘techniques’- this links to the images of people

playing guitars etc. There are only a few headings which are

made bold, this shows the less

importance of the articles, the ones

that people may not read nor buy the magazine for.

There’s very little description of the

articles, in contrast to the other one it

only has the heading and then

maybe the name of whose in the article.

There’s technology advertising, it says to

subscribe to the magazine, this can be online- this is showing other media platform

into the printed media. They’ve used a lot of space, leaving hardly

any white areas, making the magazine look full but the white colour makes it look

clean.

Page 7: Guitar Magazine Evaluation

The headline fits with the scene of the

picture as there’s a ashy type of

background so the writing is a faded type

of font and a faded orange colour.

There’s the writers being advertised in small writing above

the headline- showing the writer and the

photographer, this is used for future

reference, advertising to the market of their

abilities.

There’s a kicker just beneath the headline

offering a small justification of what is to be expected when reading the upcoming

article.

The image is spread along both pages,

enlarged to leave no space for any other

design/colour.

There has been a filter added to the image, giving the tone/style grey stone effect.

The first paragraph of the article is informative- it’s

telling the audience what the artist has created. It’s also

giving off a judged view, the writer states how he

usually is delivering ‘inhuman wails and crushes’ showing

the writer knows of the artist and is

opinionated of the was he delivers his

music. The paragraph also address how

he is going to explain what he

has done with his new music and

why. There’s a drop

cap.

Page 8: Guitar Magazine Evaluation

There’s a mid shot image- having the

head of the artist up to his chest on show.

The artist has got direct eye contact with the camera lens. This is making him show

interactive feelings with his audience. There’s a type of opening with his

stare, he looks as though he’s revealing something with the

readers, like he’s letting them see him- see his

thoughts. This page has the writing running along

the bottom third of the page, two thirds of the page is taken up by the

artists head and shoulders.

After the intro theres a question-addressed

to the artist.

The ring of the artist is being deliberately shown, pressing he’s not single, this could

be to show rock bands/artists usually are known for their

woman fans, but this shows he cares

about the passion of the music more than the sexual side of it. The language of the text is advanced,

using formal vocabulary and

advanced punctuality. The use

of columns separates the text to be presented clear and neat. It

presents the magazine nicely,

making the presentation of the

article looking smart.

Page 9: Guitar Magazine Evaluation

The target audience of the magazine would be class A2-C2. The language used is formal and the structure of the articles etc show more of passion towards music than anything else, so the magazine is aimed for people of a higher education. The age would be aimed towards 17-25 year olds as

the magazine is mostly aimed towards learning how to play the guitar/songs. So it would be new learners.

The gender would be men, due to the lack of women in the magazine and the genre of music.

The ethnicity would be white British, there’s hardly any mixed culture in the magazine and most of the artists are white/British.

The sexuality of the audience would be mixed, there’s no sexual evidence in the magazine to show an hints of it being only towards straight people. The attitude of the audience would be understanding

and passionate about music, as the articles show love for music the readers would have to associate with it.

From the magazine I liked the structure of the double page spread, the way the image is spread onto each page, taking up all the space. I

also liked the amount of pictures on the contents page and the layout they're in .
