The first Olympic Games: -the purpose was to honor Zeus

-Olympic Games were held every 4 years

-was held in Greece in 776 B.C.

-given laurel to wear as a sign of victory

-running and jumping

to show respect to the gods

-some even were listed of the 7 Wonders of

the World such as the Temple of Artemis and

the Statue of Zeus at Olympia

-olive trees are the trees of Greece

-in the Greek mythology: Athena competed

against Poseidon to be named protector of the

city

-Athena represented the olive-tree to the

people which beaten Poseidon, so Athena was

named as the protectress of the town,

therefore Athens was named as the capital

-legends has it that every 500 years a

Phoenix would be born and when the

Phoenix died, it will be reborn out of the

ashes

signs of the Phoenix

-even out of wars, people pray for the signs

because it would bless them with a long life
