In the first sentence it is clear which apple I am talking about. It is definite!
In the second, it could be any apple. It’s not definite (indefinite).

Explanation
In most European languages gender affects not only male and female (people and
animals), but also all the other nouns. A concrete noun like chair could be feminine.
An abstract noun like love could be masculine. REASON? Many.
Tradition. Ancient languages.
Heritage.Influences from other languages.
