Why is Grammar ?Harmer argues, “It may be that communicative competence is best achieved through communicating, through making meanings, and grammar is a way of tidying these meaning up.”

Then, Leibniz as cited in Harmer, says, “A language is acquired through practice, it is merely perfected through grammar.”

(Jeremy Harmer. 1999. How To Teach Grammar. Harlow: Pearson Education Limited, p.25.)

Page 10: Grammar Course Introduction

What is grammar?Harmer states there are several definitions of grammar, first, grammar is partly the study of what forms (or structures) are possible in a language. Second, grammar is a description of the rules that govern how a language’s sentences are formed. The last, grammar is conventionally seen as the study of the syntax and morphology of the sentences.

Meanwhile, syntax is the system of rules that cover the order of the words in a sentence, and morphology is the system of rules that cover the formation of the words.

(Jeremy Harmer. 1999. How To Teach Grammar. Harlow: Pearson Education Limited, p.1.)

What is grammar?Furthermore, Ur argues, “Grammar is sometimes

defined as the way words are put together to make correct sentences.”

Besides, he also says that grammar is a set of rules that define how words (or parts of words) are

combined or changed to form acceptable units of meaning within a language.

(Peny Ur. 1996. A Course in Language Teaching. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, p.75.)

What is grammar? Moreover, Purpura states, “Grammar is defined in terms of

grammatical form and meaning, which are available to be accessed in language use.”

In addition, Brown says, “Grammar is the system of rules governing the conventional arrangement and relationship of words in a

sentence.”

(James Purpura. 2004. Assessing Grammar. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, p.85.)(H. Douglas Brown. 2007. Teaching by Principles, An Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy, Third Edition. White Plains : Pearson Education. p.420.)

1. Prescriptive grammar

Decapua argues, “Prescriptive grammar is the grammar taught in school, discussed in newspaper and magazine columns on language, or mandated by language academies such as those found in Spain or France.” It attempts to tell people how they should use appropriate languages like what, how, and why they should say something.

(Andrea Decapua. 2008. Grammar for Teacher: A Guide to American English for Native and Non-Native Speakers. New York: Springer, p.10.)

Page 14: Grammar Course Introduction

2. Descriptive grammar In contrast, Decapua says, “. . . descriptive grammar means saying that everything is right and nothing is wrong. What we must consider is the purpose for which a speaker is using language.”

Commonly it can be found when adult native speakers actually use their language in their daily activities.

(Andrea Decapua. 2008. Grammar for Teacher: A Guide to American English for Native and Non-Native Speakers. New York: Springer, p.13.)
