Male youth The model that I used for my main cover image is a young white European male. Using a male model who is posed as if they are ‘doing’ something stereotypically represents masculinity. The colour blue is a stereotypical denota>on used to represent masculinity and is also commonly linked with youth. The colour white signifies purity, which is also associated with youth. The subject of the photo is well lit and has skin with liCle imperfec>ons, which is considered desirable. These are conven>ons that I’ve used to represent a younger audience. By using a model that wears glasses I have represented my audience as an intellectual type. This is because glasses stereotypically connote intelligence. I wanted to appeal to my target audience which would be more interested in someone who is successful in their crea>ve career, rather than just have a model that shows a lot of skin. I expect my audience to realize that their sense of knowledge and passion is being appealed to and not just their appeal to sex. However by using a young male it will s>ll appeal to my young target audience, because a large majority of them are single.
Digital Age One of my biggest goals was to represent the zeitgeist of the developing technology of our >me. My products strongly represent the ‘digital age’ in which young audiences have been born into. I’ve achieved this using media convergence, colour scheme, and graphics with digital connota>ons. For example, on my front cover I created blocks for the cover lines to sit on top of. This looks similar to when you highlight a word on a computer, therefore it connotes technology. Similar to this, the graphics that I applied to the main image of the double page spread represent technology, because products in tech magazines are conven>onally surrounded by these kind of digital effects. By combining music and tech magazine conven>ons, it appeals to the exis>ng audiences of both genres of magazine (more specifically the DIYer psychographic). Using social network convergence and logos from Facebook and TwiCer is an extremely effec>ve way to represent the digital world, because they are icons known globally by a mass audience. My colour scheme helps to represent this also, because the white, blue, and black is a stereotypical mo>f for that of social networks and is intertextual especially to Facebook.
What I missed out When represen>ng a specific/niche audience, it is very important to avoid using any props or visuals that could lead the audience into misinterpre>ng the intended reading. I wouldn’t want to aCract pop culture audiences just to have them read content that doesn’t match up to the representa>ons that I’ve included. For example I’ve kept to a colour scheme that represents my tech orientated audience, rather than use bright pinks that are exclusively represent a young female audience (such as the Nicki Minaj double page spread). I’ve also ensured that the content of my ar>cle expresses how my fic>onal ar>st feels about the crea>ve process in the indie music industry, rather than have details about the star’s personal life and issues. For my front cover, I avoided using too many props and unneeded accessories, because I felt that a reader of my audience would prefer ac>on over appearance. Too many accessories, and it could be mistaken for a hip-‐hop genre magazine (such as the vibe cover). My magazine is more intertextual to the NME
cover, which is targeted at an audience interested in indie music, because of the ar>sts on the main cover image. I believe the NME house style is much more suited to a magazine such as my own, therefore I referred to their products during the produc>on process.
