DEFINITION OF GRADES

The results of the GCSE examinations are reported on a 7-point scale ofgrades: A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Candidates who fail to reach the minimumstandard for G receive no grade. A subject receiving no grade will not berecorded on the certificate. Grades A, B and C maintain the standards ofthe former GCE'O'level grades A, B and C and the former CSE Grade l;grades D, E, F and G maintain the standards of the former CSE grades 2, 3,4 and 5.

The assessment of Oral Communication is compulsory for all candidatesentered for GCSE English. It is separately assessed and the results arereported on a 5-point numbered scale, with Grade 1 indicating the highestlevel of attainment and Grade 5 the lowest level of attainment.

ORDER OF GRADES

Grades are shown in descending order of grade, the highest grade.appearing at the top of the list. Subjects for which the same grade isawarded are shown in alphabetical order.

EXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS

* This GCSE examination included an assessment of English OralCommunication (see Definition of Grades above).

** This GCSE examination wirs designed for candidates aged 17years and over.

*** This GCSE examination was designed to meet the needs ofexternal candidates who were unable to meet the course work orother requirements set out in the National Criteria.

CONDITIONS OF ISSUE

This certificate is and remains the property of the Northern ExaminingAssociation at all times and is issued on the following conditions:

(a) any alteration to this certificate renders it invalid;

(b) this certificate must be delivered up to the Northern ExaminingAssociation on request by the Association.
