One of the main things we learn is prison officers have to work with people who

can be difficult. We can see this where the writer, who is an inmate, says some

prisoners are “angry, confused and needy people” and “you have many inmates

in our prisons today with morals and then you have some without any.” This

suggests working in a prison can be dangerous.

Another thing we learn is that new prison officers don’t get enough training. We

can see this where he says training is “watered down” and that there are “many

situations they don’t know how to deal with.” This emphasises new prison officers

have to learn on the job.

The writer suggests prison officers are facing more challenges. We can see this

where he says, “Over the past eleven years I have seen the overcrowding make

things worse for prisoners and prison officers alike.” This reveals things are getting

worse due a lack of funding.
