FUTURE TENSES

• We use future tenses to express action that will be done in the future.e.g.

I will walk with the dog.

• There are four ways to express the future tense of the verb:By adding “will/shall” before the base form of the verb (Simple Future)By adding “will be/shall be” before the present participle form of the verb

(Future Progressive/Continuous)By adding “will have/shall have” before the past participle form of the verb

(Future Perfect)By adding “will have been/shall have been” before the present participle of the

verb (Future Perfect Progressive/Continuous)

1. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE• Add the word “will” or “shall” before the base form of the action verb to

express simple future tense.e.g.

They will go to the church this Sunday.I shall invite my friends to our house someday.He will participate in the upcoming speech contest.When Kirsten arrives, she will announce the programme for tomorrow’s

culminating activity.

2. FUTURE PROGRESSIVE TENSE• Add the phrase “will be” or “shall be” before the present

participle form of the verb to express future progressive tense.

e.g.My friends will be coming tonight for the party.I will be eating lunch in the cafeteria once the conference is done.They will be observing the crowd for the security of the civilians in the event.Claire will be going to the faculty office later together with Annakin and Eilah.

3. FUTURE PERFECT TENSE• Add the phrase “will have” or “shall have” before the past participle form

of the verb to express future perfect tense.e.g.

I will have walked the dog, if the rain had stopped.My friends will have gone to their homes once the night has fallen.They will have gotten sick if they stayed up very late in the evening.

* Note : Future perfect tense is often used in conditional statements, meaning, it is used after an action is done.

4. FUTURE PERFECT PROGRESSIVE TENSE

• Add “will have been” or “shall have been” before the present participle form of the verb to express future perfect progressive tense.

e.g.I will have been walking the dog.My friends will have been going to their homes once the night has fallen.They will have been getting sick if they stayed up very late in the evening.

* Note: We cannot use “Future Perfect Progressive Tense” in passive voice.
