Title – The title ‘Frozen’ is in the upper centre of the page. The fact that it is in the centre of the page suggests that it is integral to the story/message within the film. The word Frozen has connotations of winter, ice and snow which is further emphasised through a dark, icy, blue colour and swirly yet sharp font; this also reflects the shape of icicles and snowflakes. The background behind the title is a snowflake and frost so it further suggests information about what will be in the film and what it could be about as there is little information on the poster.; therefore the viewers must guess for themselves and interpret the hidden messages as best as they can with the evidence they are given. Above the title is the production companies name ‘Disney’. This is crucial to include on posters as if audiences recognise a successful company or enjoy previous films that company has produced, then it will entice them to go and see the film from that information in conjunction with the actual look of the poster. Main image – The main image on a poster will usually contain the main characters of a film. An audience could guess from this poster that the main characters at the bottom were the main characters within the film. Therefore if they like the representation of these characters they may be more likely to go and see the film as opposed to having boring and uninteresting characters. The characters are cartoons, similar to other popular Disney films e.g. Tangled. Moreover, the representations of the characters are mainly happy and their makeup/styling is relatively typical Disney Princess/Prince-esque. Therefore this would appeal to typical Disney film/programme watchers as it adheres to the usual codes and conventions of Disney movies. In addition to this, the snowman at the bottom further emphasises the importance of the title as he is clearly a snowman and he is looking up in an awe-stricken/amazed expression at the title. This further highlights the importance of the title in regard to the story within the film as well as involving the character at the bottom. Also, the characters are emerged in snow and are in front of an icy background to emphasise the genre and style of the film and what it contains as well as further reflecting the title and possible deeper meaning within the film. This indexical signifier shows that the film is set in winter and further leads to the enigma code of the film and requires the audience to watch the film to discover why everything is frozen and what significance the characters at the bottom of the image contribute to this. Institutional information – Due to Frozen being a Disney film we can guess that the genre specific signifier would be the cartoon fairy-tale/princess style characters and a romance/adventure genre and that the audience would be ABC1 6-16 year olds, mainstreamers, with an interest in films, Disney, cartoons and music. They would most likely watch this film in order to feel happy and uplifted - also as a family experience, especially with young children. In having ‘from the creators of…’ at the top of the page, it automatically attracts the audiences of those films as they will infer that this film will be of a similar standard/quality. This would improve Frozen’s audience base purely from having similar films by the same creator at the top. However, this could also decrease the possible audience of the film as if the viewers of the other ones didn’t enjoy them, then it may put them off watching Frozen as they will compare it to the other two they’ve seen and not enjoyed. Release – The poster has the release period at the bottom but is very vague about the date of this and the specifics. This could be to create a viral hype/word of mouth about when this new film is coming out and creates an exciting, anticipating and mysterious atmosphere about the film and its release. In saying ‘Thanksgiving’ we interpret that this was the American film poster and that it was released around Christmas time so that it complies with the winter theme of the film. This could be seen as the USP for the film as it directly links to a prime season for watching films. Cinema information – In having information about the film being shown in 3D and Real 3D it encourages people to go and see the film at cinemas purely for the experience. This could enhance the money the film makes in cinemas as people may want to go and see the film for the experience as opposed to pirating it or waiting for it to come out on DVD. This is purely through the use of providing information about new digital media. Another USP could be the song ‘Let it Go’ by Idina Menzel. This was not only popular in regard to the film but also got the film a huge amount of publicity as it got to number 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 charts and also the US Hot Dance Club Billboard charts too upon a few weeks after release of the film. It was also daubed a ‘coming out’ song for homosexuals and was seen as a revelation in the LGBT community. The message of this in the film is to break out from your confinements and be yourself which is an inspirational message to people of all ages, backgrounds, genders and sexualities. This could suggest that Frozen is a high concept film as the deeper meanings could suggest that the message is about being who you are and not being afraid to show it and show the real you. Institutional Information continued – Box office figures: $1,274,219,009 Budget: $150 million therefore it was an above the line production.
