Sentence Problems- Fragments Sometimes a group of words looks like a sentence—it has a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end—but it may be missing a subject or verb or both. These are called fragments. A dependent clause on its own is a fragment. It does not express a complete idea. Other times fragments are missing either a subject or a real verb. and a verb is a clause. Remember an independent clause

is one that is able to stand alone as a sentence.

When two independent clauses are written together without proper punctuation between them, that is a run-on sentence.

Connect the two independent clauses with a semicolon, but be careful when using a semicolon. The relationship between the two clauses must be obvious. The sentence is about ONE main idea.
