The Summer School

Italy - origin of modern banking

Florence is an ideal place to discuss banking and its values. It was in Italy that current banking was actually invented: In the first half of the past millennium, traders started to merchandi-se money on wooden banks on the streets – “bancos” in Italian – and this is where our modern “bank” has its origin.

With influential families such as the Florentine Medici, banking as we know it today, becomes global and influences political decisions of kingdoms and the Vatican. But what about Social Banking?

Of course, Florence is not only rich in its economic history and inventions, but also in all forms of cultural activity. Incredible values in arts, knowledge and architecture are at home in the Tuscan city. Be inspired by these unique surroundings!

In addition to introducing Social Banking in general, every International Summer School on Social Banking addresses a main topic.

In 2010, we focus on “Banking on values” and ask “what values?” these actually are. As banking is a social interac-tion, we will also link these discussions to our personal values.

The following topics will be covered specifically

• Best practices in Social Banking• Values in banking• The impact of banking in society• Microfinance• Religious values and banking• Banking as a commons• Social Banking 2.0• Individual and organisational competencies for Social Banking• New Economics• The role of donations in the economy

Due to the interactive methods applied, you will have the opportunity to propose additional topics during the conference.

Topic in 2010

Banking on values - what values?

To achieve the goals of the Summer School, we use the following techniques:

• Expert lectures• Panel discussions• Workshops /

group work• Open Space

sessions• An interactive

learning event• Free spaces that

allow for creativity

During „Open Space“ sessions, participants have the opportunity to propose their own topics for the subse-quent discussion with other interested persons. Thus, all participants have the opportunity to discuss additional topics that might not be covered by the conference programme.

Participants please feel free to bring instruments or any other artistic materials. Arts, culture and creativity play a central role during the Summer School.
