Ideas for incorporating more or new edibles into the landscape
Nutritional concerns for edibles in the landscape
Fruit trees you can grow to have fruit in your yard all year long
FERTILIZING = SUPPLEMENTS
Photosynthesis creates FOOD
Fertilizers are NOT food
Fertilizers are plant Supplements
BTW – Plants are Magick!
APPLYING FERTILIZERS
Would you spray nutritional supplements on your skin?
Fertilizers best serve the plant where the plant absorbs the nutrients – In The Roots
Supplemental information to think about…
With nutrients
COLD WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS
Sometimes in cold weather slow release nutrients (manures and organics) in the soil will not be released from their holding pads and be made available to the plants. When this happens you may see nutrient deficiencies even though you know nutrients should be there.
Two solutions –
Wait it out for the warm weather to come back and release those nutrients back to the plant
Apply a little bit of quick release nutrients (inorganic, usually the powders you dilute in water and apply)
FERTILIZER BURN
When TOO much fertilizer is applied to a plant the fertilizer has the potential to chemically burn the plant
While not Typical in organic fertilizers it CAN happen – Chicken manures in particular
Symptom – Brown leaf margins
Solution –
Make sure to follow the instructions on the bag
If applying manures only apply a little at a time over a longer course of time and water in
Usually not a problem in Organic gardening, but I want to mention it anyway
