Finding a book in the UWC Library: in 5 slides

You’ve got a shelf number from the catalogue: now what?

1. Note the level of the Library

• SmartSearch tells you which level to find the book (Level 8)

• Notice if it’s currently “available” or “checked out” – save yourself the walk!

• Write down the shelf number: 070.52 WEL, taking special note of the 1st 3 numbers.

2. Get to the right shelf for 070

• Once you’re on Level 8, find the shelf for the 070 titles.

• Note: 070 comes after 027 and before 111.

• Read the numbers before the dot as a string of information.

070 fits in between this sequence of numbers

3. Getting closer to the book• Now look amongst the

shelves for the correct number – 070.

• Once you’ve located the books marked 070, zoom in on the numbers behind the dot (070.52 WEL).

• These are read individually as “Five; Two”, not “Fifty-two”.

• Your job is to first find 070.5, then search for the subdivision of 070.52All of these books begin 070.5. Notice that

070.50973 comes before 070.52After the dot, figures are read digit-by- digit

(0 comes before 2)

4. Last thing: check the letters• You’ve found the right

number, but what about the letters (070.52 WEL)?

• Now that’s really easy: books with the same number are shelved alphabetically by the letters that follow the number.

• See: These two have the same number, but SCH comes after POL

5. You’ve got it! Recap• Walk to the correct level and use the first 3 numbers as

a string to find the right shelf.• Then: remember to treat the numbers after the dot

individually.• Because the numbers after the dot are read digit-by-

digit, this means a book marked 070.5082 comes before 070.52.

• That’s because 0 (070.5082) comes before 2 (070.52).• Remember: After the dot, numbers are not a string.• Happy hunting!
