» Putting the 4 different graphs together we find it is printed text that is the least favoured resource for many people with disabilities.

» Providing information in a number of multi-sensory formats increases the opportunity for inclusivity and reduces the risk of exclusion.

» Culinary analogy: combining ingredients. Create more recipes, a wider and richer range of resources that are accessible to many more people and have the capacity to be more adaptable to the needs of different individuals.

» Inclusion should rightly be about supporting learners with disabilities however inclusive practice can have a positive impact for everyone and the advantage of this is that if it provides accessibility for people with disabilities it has the capacity to be more accessible for everyone. Tools for everyone (ESOL, struggling readers, learners juggling studying with family, caring or working commitments), tools for resilience!

» Lets look at how we can exploit the ubiquitous technologies that are around us to create more inclusive environments.

» Assistive technology tools are built into a range of everyday software. For example Microsoft Word allows magnification. If you use Webpage View the text will reflow to fit the page number how much magnification you use. Office 2010 upwards has built-in text-to-speech which you can add to the quick access toolbar options. Autocorrect facilities serve as a type of word prediction. If a document has been structured using the inbuilt heading styles the "Navigation pane" or "Document Map" view gives what is effectively a linear mind map showing how the different ideas within the document stacked together. Word also allows easy and instant colour changing as well as allowing learners to shift from one format (for example word) to a different format like PDF or webpages that might be more suitable for reading on a mobile device. Finally, older versions of Microsoft Word allow you to do an auto summary. Versions from 2007 upwards do not include this feature but the navigation pane/document map view is an effective way of understanding the key ideas in the text.
