Evaluation question 2 how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation question 2 how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

At the beginning of my Media A2 course, I wanted to make the style of all of my final products completely different whilst maintaining the same themes throughout applying this to my music video, digipak and website. My reasoning for this was that the different designs for all of my media products would make my products appear unique and different, yet the themes running through all of my products making my final texts appear consistent and professional. I was inspired to do this from researching bands who had done a similar process with their media products, such as Vampire Weekend.

As a result, I wanted incorporate themes of youth, rebellion and enigma within my final media products. The reason for this would be because these are conventions that several bands of the indie genre (such as Foster The People and Imagine Dragons) use frequently. Because of this, I felt that I would be drawing from my own personal research whilst making my media products flow cohesively.

I coloured my digipak entirely in black and white, used colour for my music video but toned the colouring down to make it very dull, and used colour for my website but incorporated aspects black and white colouring in to it. The reasoning for this was to establish that all of these products were incredibly versatile and ranged, however the aspects of black and white colouring featured in all products represents a common theme running through our fake band. I believe that this adds a layer of mystery and unpredictability to both our band and their products as audiences may see this as not knowing what direction the band may take, only understanding that the band are of the indie genre.

Additionally, the reason that I did not use a picture of the band for the front cover of my digipak was to establish band are music-orientated, as opposed to image-orientated. My research has shown that, in other genres, the artists may appear on the front of their album to promote themselves instead of their music, many indie musicians do not appear on the front cover of their albums so that they can promote their music first and intrigue their audience to find out more about them after listening. Coupled with many images in my digipak showing the band to be playing their instruments, I believe that I have achieved this.

Another theme that I commonly used within my products was to always have our lead singer (Dean) be centred appearing with the rest of the band. Using inspiration from Richard Dyers Star theory in that stars are constructed, artificial images. This means that the artist is essentially a brand or product introduced to sell their music to their audiences. By establishing Dean as the frontman of the group by keeping him in the centre, a face is immediately put on to the media that the band generate, making the band more identifiable and making all of my products flow consistently.

Combining all of my products

I used my final website as a way to promote and advertise both my final products of my music video and digipak to our bands target audience. The website contains the music video, a brief of the digipak and several pictures of the band themselves, linked with a number of different websites such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. This further adds realism to my media products by evolving the brand for our band The Secret Nothings, ensuring that my media products reflect the professional standard set by real-life media texts.
