What is a Production Company? What do they do?

A production company is the company that is responsible for the physical making of the film. They are the people whom create the media product and develop it to conform to the high standards of the film industry. Production companies provide the funding of the project along with plans and actions of marketing, the scheduling of the film production and the scripting of the movie. It is also the role of the production company to supply the actors and resources, post-production and distribution, whether that be through its own distribution centre or through a separate distribution company.

What is the job of a film distributor?

A film distributor is a company which is responsible for the release, marketing and distribution of a media product. The film distributor is responsible for the marketing of the movie and how the knowledge of the film is reaching the audience, through posters, cinema trailers, etc. It is also the responsibility of the film distributor to decide in which form the film will be available. It is important that the distributor has an extensive knowledge about how audiences prefer to watch movies so that the movie is able to reach a large an audience as possible, an example of this is through the website, Love Film.

Which film distributor would you choose for your film and why? What other films have they distributed that are similar to yours?

I have decided that Paramount Pictures would be the best film distributor to market and distribute my film as they are a very well known company with an excellent reputation in successful films. Paramount pictures distributed the highly successful Beverly Hills Cop series which is similar to my film therefore has a reputation with the success of crime/comedy films. Paramount is a company with a lot of experience and one that has gained a lot of trust through distributing some of the most successful movies of all time. Paramount has also distributed movies such as: Titanic, Transformers and Star Trek.

How would your film be funded?

My film would be funded through lottery funds from the BFI. The BFI allow film makers to apply for a ‘Film Fund’ which applicants should expect a response from within six to eight weeks. The BFI have the fund as to encourage the creating of innovative, new films from British film makers. I believe that the Film Fund would be the best way to fund my movie as they would provide enough money for the production to not have any money troubles. This funding would also allow us to distribute the film in the UK and label it as a British film.
