What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution Distribution is the act of sharing something out among a

number of recipients. Media institutes can also use the method of simultaneous

distribution. This is whereby a media text is released on more than one format on the same day.

Films are distributed so that the audience the producers are aiming to have watch the movie, can see the final cut of it.

The most popular ways of distribution are:Cinema DVD/Blu-ray Online

Cinema The cinema is the most popular way of early distribution of a

film. It is normally the first way a media product is distributed. New media products are normally shown in cinemas for around

3 months. This gives the producers target audience a lot of time to go and see the film, meaning a lot of money will be made over this time.

Experiencing a boxing film in a cinema can be a lot better than for waiting for it to come out on DVD or blu-ray to watch it at home. This is because the sound and atmosphere of a cinema will intensify a sporting film, gaining the audiences attention more. This fact will draw customers to go and watch the media product in the cinema.

Online Media productions can be distributed on online streaming services,

such as Netflix and Amazon Prime for example. These services are coming with a lot of benefits for customers and

therefore becoming a lot more popular. For example, customers who use either of these services can access they’re account anywhere and everywhere with internet. These services also mean that the customer does not need to leave the comfort of their own home to watch what they want to watch.

Other benefits of these services include the fact that once a film has been uploaded to one of them, it will stay on there forever, meaning you can access it whenever you want.

These services do come at a reasonable price, considering the fact that you could watch 10 films in one month by only paying the monthly cost, rather than going out and buying the films individually.

DVD & Blu-ray Most films that are produced will always be released on DVD

and Blu-ray disks after a certain length of time. One reason for this is because some people who have always watched films using a disk don’t like change, and so continue to buy disks rather than switching to online streaming.

DVD and Blu-ray disks are normally released a certain amount of months after the film has been distributed through other medias first. This is because if the media production were to be released on DVD and Blu-ray first, it would not be as popular as there is more publicity gained through the likes of cinema and online streaming adverts on TV.

Distributors of ‘Knockout’ A distributor is an agent or individual or supplies goods to retailers

or customers. In this case, our distributors will be the company responsible for marketing the film. The distributors aim is to make the film as successful as possible.

There were various different distributors which could have easily distributed our production, ‘Knockout’, however after looking at how successful the film ‘Southpaw’ was, we decided to use the same company as them, which is DreamWorks studios.

DreamWorks methods of distributing are:- Cinema release (2-3 months)- Digital release (4-5 moths after cinema release)- DVD/Blu-ray (1 or two weeks after digital release)- TV for free (18-24 months after initial release)

DreamWorks will distribute the media product on all these different platforms over time so more people are able to view the product.
